Fuck You by Lily Allen

So you say
It's not okay to be gay
Well I think you're just evil
You're just some racist who
can't tie my laces
Your point of view is medieval

it sounds so happy but its lyrics

A song from the 90s Third eye blind - semi charmed life.
sounds rlly upbeat and happy but really its about depressed people trying to finding happiness and being stuck in the drug scene

I'm glad you mentioned "I'm only happy when it rains" I love garbage :D and I can't decide is beautifully dark. why do i like these songs so much?

The Cure's "In Between Days" is a great example of dark lyrics with an upbeat tempo! Check it out.

Models "Barbados" - the chorus is quite upbeat and dancey but it's actually about depression. A big hit way back in 1985, lead singer James Freud battled his addictions and demons until last year when he took his own life.

Sonia "You'll Never Stop Me Loving You" - classic 80's Stock Aitken Waterman pop. But listen to the lyrics - it's quite obsessive and stalker-ish.

I loved "Pumped Up Kicks" until I actually read what the words were. Musically, it has a great beat/sound (IMO), but SO dark. Now I feel guilty for liking it.

‘I want to love you like your Dad/And be your Superman/I’ll show you things you’ve never had/And hold your little hand…’
.

Can't forget Warren Zevon.

"The Way It Used to Be" by Pet Shop Boys. Good rhythm and a very melancholy sound and text.

Upbeat! With a Downside…

Does this count?

Reaching forward, through the dark
Dead, marching forward, much colder than the cud
Reaching forward, through the dark
Spreading the soilbleed, no return when you're marked

:band:

A bunch of Lady Gaga songs.

"Dance in the Dark" is about a girl who looks too ugly to have sex with the lights on.

Some girls won't dance to the beat of the track
She won't walk away, but she won't look back
She looks good, but her boyfriend says she's a mess
She's a mess, she's a mess, now the girl is stressed
She's a mess, she's a mess, she's a mess, she's a mess

Baby loves to dance in the dark
'Cause when he's lookin' she falls apart
Baby loves to dance in the dark
There are also some sick plastic surgery references in the beginning and then a creepy shoutout to a bunch of tragically dead celebrities later (Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana, etc.).

"So Happy I Could Die" is also markedly depressing.

I love that lavender blonde
The way she moves, the way she walks
I touch myself, can't get enough
And in the silence of the night
Through all the tears and all the lies
I touch myself, and it's alright
Seemingly about a pervert.

Took a minute to find.

Placebo's album meds has a song called song to say goodbye. It's upbeat but is actually the ex of a man kicking the door down to save him from a suicide attempt.

Robyn is also a good one, many songs have wrenching and dark lyrics about failure and breakdowns in relationships but are laid over upbeat melodies and dance type songs.

For me it was the exact opposite. I hated this song to death until I listened to the words. Now it's starting to grow on me.
