Vegetarians.

Oh, and Tomatoe and Mayonnaise on Whole Wheat, greatest snack EVER!

There's something about combining tomato with bread and mayo that's just absolutely magical. A friend of mine has a recipe for a bread/tomato salad that has that same magic...only moreso because ALL of the bread gets soaked with tomato/mayonnaise goodness.

Now I'm all hungry.

Oh, I could die happy with that knowledge.

Oh, and after I found out there were multiple KINDS of Lettuce, I haven't touch Iceburg Lettuce since, tasteless and pointless. I could eat a whole head of Romaine just as is, it's so yummy :-)

**I should probably grow long, floppy ears and twitch my nose***

What part of the vegetarian diet gives sustantial ammounts of protein?

Do fish count?

Aww, even poor iceberg has its charms. Make some homemade green goddess, add some sieved egg, crumble some cheese on it. Yum, wedge salads. (Fatty pork is good here too, but these parentheses will hold it back.)

I have been a vegetarian since 1990. I try to eat as healthy as possible on a regular basis. Food varies quite a bit. Any list I would make would only be just an example because it would depend on the type of food.

I do eat yogurt every day. I love greek yogurt, especially the faga yogurt with the separate fruit section.

For breakfast, normally oatmeal, cereal, or yogurt.

Lunch and dinner can be pretty much anything that is not meat.

Types of foods that I stay away from: filipino, cuban, brazilian, seafood and steak restaurants. Other than that, I can usually find some good things to eat.

My favorites include: california cuisine, american (Red Robbin), Italian, Mediterranean, Indian, american mexican food (not authentic because that is full of lard...and makes people really fat), greek food, Chinese, Thai (mmmm....thai food) ;)

In fact, right now, I would say that Thai food is my fav.

When doing soups, make sure to stay away from anything with chicken broth. Lentil soup is normally one of the yummy alternatives. Lentils are a wonderful source of high protein and they are very low in fat on top of that.

I'm most definitely NOT a vegetarian. On the other hand, I don't eat much meat, VERY rarely have more than one serving of any kind of meat in the same day, and usually am fully vegetarian at least 2 or 3 days per week.

Vegan, though, is another matter. I almost never have vegan days - usually it's "wrecked" by milk, yogurt, or eggs.

I'm probably down to around 200 pounds of meat a year, and probably about 40% of that is fish. Most of the other meat is chicken and turkey...

^ Turkey...toxic? Huh? (I do my best to avoid HFCS, though, which I think is "glucose-fructose" up your way - I think that's the most important "common" thing to avoid...)

On the fish, though, I try my best for WILD CAUGHT stuff, which limits the options most of the time in Macomb, Illinois. Often I'll bring fish back from 200, 300 or so miles away on ice.

It gives me my RDA for mercury, LOL.

i know it has been said already but i cant keep my mouth shut so ill say it again: the myth that vegetarians are undernurished is exactly that, a myth. check your fucking facts before you talk down to other people. proteins are readily available in vegetarian meals (eggs, milk, soy... ) as are B12 vitamins (again, eggs and milk). sure, some vegetarians are badly nurished, as are some non-vegetarians. jeez.

as for this...

Sounds like it's just an outrageously expensive, ridiculous way to live to me.

Yes, vegetables and fruits are good for you, and I eat them for the health benefits, but my body can't handle eating only vegetables, and neither can my wallet.

thats the most clueless thing ive ever read. vegetarian food is way, way cheaper than non-vegetarian food.

i know i seem pissed, but im not a militant vegetarian. i think people who want to eat meat should do so and thats fine. im just pissed that people throw around statements that are just plain wrong, to try and discredit vegetarianism as a viable and healthy way of living. why would they do that? what the fuck is wrong with them?

I'm not sure I care enough to actually research it, but off the cuff that sounds like one of the dumbest and most biased quotes I've read all day.

I mean, is he counting every single heart attack as a death caused by red meat or something? my doctor routinely tells me to eat more red meat as a source of iron (I've been in danger of going anemic ever since I drastically cut my calories). I don't really care for it, though.

It's a real quote, I researched it when I first read it, a few years ago. I have no idea of the context though, it just always struck me as quite powerful.

As for iron, if you lack it, many green vegetables have a good amount in, and a good multi-vit with iron is a good fall back, especially for those lacking,

Thanks for being the guy to push PETA style propaganda in a thread where it wasn't called for, asked for, needed, or cited as something YOU ate as part of your diet as a vegetarian.

But i'll help you and the good doc out - one burger at a time.

(and for the doc's reference, i do live near a good hospital. I also live in the realm of common sense; the sense not to have a burger every single FUCKING day)

Yeah I'm sure he's a PETA activist too.

If I HAD to give up beef and pork I could. But I gotta have my chicken and fish. GOT TOO!!! But this thread inspires me to try and try again to add more veggies and fruit into my diet.

White meats are soooooo much better for you anyway, so if you could cut out most red meats, and stick to chicken and fish, it would benefit your health massively.

I believe in a perfectly healthy and natural diet, including lots of greens, veggies, fruits, and meat, personally. I've accepted the fact that one person going on a meat strike isn't going to save the cows, and veggies can't provide the natural animal fats that we do need in some amount to maintain a healthy body.

We do NOT need any animal fats, not at all. The good fats we get from seeds, nuts and some spreads are ample for a healthy body.

Plus, being vege, for me and most of the veggies I know, isn't about saving animals, it's about saving ourselves, living longer healthier lives, and if that saved any animal in the process, bonus. :)

No, fish are not plants.

See my earlier comments for vegetarian protein sources.
Aren't there Green Fish?

I wish I could be green and perform Photosyntheisis, than eating wouldn't be necessary, I could just drink lots of water :-)

I look at vegetarianism like organized religion... don't try to convert me and I don't care what you do ;)

As someone that is not religious, a vegetarian, and someone that has never tried to convert people to become a vegetarian....I find that a little offensive. Not all vegetarians are the same.

I will never be one.

I eat lots of vegetables, but I'm allergic to a lot of fruits and nuts (oral allergy syndrome). I won't get enough protein if I don't eat meat/dairy. Plus I like the taste of it too much.

The meats I eat most frequently are chicken, freshwater fish (caught myself sometimes), bison, and game meats (elk/deer/moose).

Well...my diet is mostly vegetarian aside from eating a lot of fish (so I can't help you with b12/protein alternatives since fish is my source) so I am a pescetarian. I pretty much live off sushi and salads. Tried a burger last week and wanted to vomit.

Just eat salads like crazy. Spice things up (literally)...go to the produce section and buy a fruit/vegetable you've never even heard of and try it. Once you're accustomed to all the different flavours you can mix-and-match. Buy a cookbook. There's an unlimited amount of ways to cook different vegetables/fruits to have different tastes.

Plus, once you see meat under a microscope (especially ham)...your ass will never go back to meat.

Um... wow guys, when I posted the picture, in all sincerity, I meant as a joke just to snicker at (or ignore) and then move on. I wasn't trying to troll, offend or hurt anyone in any way, if I did, I do apologize.

Was calling me an a-hole really necessary?

Did you really think that vegetarians haven't seen that in just about every thread that even discusses the topic? To those of us who haven't eaten meat in a long time, the smell of bacon actually makes us feel queasy. Pictures of it are also extremely repulsive. It's goatse for vegetarians.

I accept your apology, and in view of it I apologize for calling you an a-hole. Usually the people who do this sort of thing are a-holes, but I see that you just didn't realize how offensive it would be to post that.

I detest the vegetarians who go around telling everyone how mean and cruel they are to eat meat. I tend to swat them much harder than non-vegetarians will.

That strikes me as a very sensible approach, especially with your allergies.
