Video: Japan - Nuclear plant explosion

I don't believe any government could be. If they are industrialized, then too much pride is riding on the line for such an out of control situation to be admitted readily.

If they are less industrialized, then again, too much pride is riding on the prestige of having nuclear energy.

Plus, there are the legitimate concerns over controlling panic.

Unfortunately, as you experts in the industry know, there are acceptable casualties within the staff and other workers who have to contain the effects. Every industry has acceptable casualties whether they talk about them or not.

It's so sad.

I hope less people will be impacted by the radiation release than Chernobyl experienced.

The compounding of the earthquake was a predictable outcome, especially in that seismic zone. There are Titanic-like vanities at work here in the design.

Hubris.

Sad.

Power lines up in progress at Japan nuclear plant

The progress on the electrical lines at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant was a welcome and significant advance after days of setbacks. With the power lines connected, officials hope to start up the overheated plant's crucial cooling system that was knocked out during the March 11 tsunami and earthquake that devastated Japan's northeast coast.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. warned that workers still need to check all equipment for damage first before switching the cooling system on to all the reactor units — a process that could take days or even weeks.

Officials will wait until sometime Wednesday to try to power up the water pumps to the unit.

The media in Australia - at least Sky news which I trust as far as I could throw a piano - is reporting that international pressure is being applied to Japan to tell the full extent of damage to the nuclear reactors. The Government over there is moving to issue idodine tablets to children to help with the radiation exposure over the last 24 hours. They're also reporting fear of a core meltdown after the explosion.

Why has the Australians given the world such crappy news channels?

thermodynamics, at the beginning you are very confident how safe the Japan's nuclear crisis is.

But now it is as bad as Chernobyl.

But now it is as bad as Chernobyl.

While Fukushima Daiichi has now achieved the same rating as Chernobyl (based on criteria for the rating system), a 7, Chernobyl is still at least 10 times worse. At Chernobyl, the explosion sent shards of the core flying out into the countryside. At Fukushima, the cores are still inside the Reactor Pressure Vessels, which are still intact.

A 7 means that there was widespread radioactive contamination beyond the plant boundary that poses a health risk to the public. That fits for both Fukushima and Chernobyl even though Chernobyl was far worse.
