There are some games that I have played where I really loved the storylines. They really spoke to me. I've always wondered if others felt similar.

Some examples would be Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy Tactics, Lunar: The Silver Star Story, and Vandal Hearts II.

I've always wondered if I would feel the same way if the same story was told in a film. I almost don't think so because I don't think the storyline portion of video games is all that long, so you probably would end up with something more akin to a short film than a feature length film.

I think the interactivity of the game makes me more invested in the characters than a short film would.

What do all of you think? What games have spoken to you?

I wonder if this is something that should be in Entertainment. If the mods think so feel free to move this thread.

I don't play video games (don't know how, and also I know I'll be addicted to them). But I had spent hours watching a friend played Silent Hill because I was intrigued by the story. The movie wasn't very good. It lacked the atmospheric spookiness of the game.

I had also read up on the story of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Buttefly.

Girlesque, most games aren't too hard to play once you get used to them. I loved playing Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, but I haven't played the original. I hear they remade it for the Wii and PS2.

I was never big into Zelda. Now, I might have to look into it.

No. I've not been into it since the first game. I'm more into turn based RPG's.

In the past year, some games that have had better than average stories & characters are Red Dead Redemption, Dragon Age, Mass Effect 2, and Uncharted 2.

Thanks for the info Spiff! I'm not current with video games anymore unfortunately.

 Thanks for sharing m1thounsand, but that's not quite what I meant by storyline in a video game.

I'm so glad I'm done with GTA IV, I want to get out of Liberty City its so freaking boring. Vice City or San Andreas would be perfect for GTA V.

But anyways the best story I liked a lot was Heavy Rain, it was one of those stories that kept me at the edge of my seat including being able to make the choice of a certain action that would leave me with a different ending. Oh but I know that this sort of thing hasn't be done in video games since Indigo Prophecy (aka Fahrenheit) did the same exact thing. But there were times in Indigo Prophecy I was like WTF seriously?

I rather enjoyed the Xenosaga Trilogy storyline.

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time was nice as well, with some good characters.

Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, IX (less so, for some reason feeling a little fuzzy on details here), X...yeah, those. I'm also FINALLY getting my chance at earlier ones, and even in simplicity the stories are pulling me in. The latter, however, (XII and XIII) have left me wanting...better. I feel like the time supposedly put into XIII was channeled into XIV instead, since it is coming out so quickly.

Zelda games usually. Unfortunately I've missed a few.

Legend of Dragoon was pretty good if I remember right.

Kingdom Hearts, actually, when taking into account all facets of the story and not just the individual face values of the games.

I don't know if they have all "spoken" to me, but they are memorable to me. Though Dragoon has faded in my memory after all this time...and the theft of my black label copy...

for me, possiblyFinal Fantasy VII, Final fantasy VIII, and final fantasy X. i found myself really being able to relate a lot to the Squall and Yuna characters of those games. Also i thought Kingdom Hearts had a really good story line that had me intrigued.

I know what you mean. I found myself relating to Squall a great deal, enough that I played it again just recently on the PSP.

My apologies to m1thousand, I didn't actually watch the video at first because I thought it was a racing game and not GTA IV.

Now that I have watched the video, I meant the storyline of a game as a whole.

There's a lot of games I enjoyed playing, but some that had stories which really got to me included:

Silent Hill 2
I had never played a Silent Hill game before, but I devoured this game with its pacing, music, atmosphere and it's story. When you finally learn that James killed Mary, I felt so many mixed emotions I didn't know what to think. James was clearly in distress: Guilt over killing his wife, hope that maybe she was actually still alive, anger with himself for creating this personal hell.

Dragon Age
Getting to know the characters in my camp, their histories, hopes, fears. Being able to become their friend or their lover. I became emotionally invested in Alistair and, to this day I believe my perfect man would be a Templar (or, not-quite Templar). During the end battle, you're in the ruins of Denerim, walking down that line of your peers and then by the surviving defenders and you hear them cheer you on with passion in their voices ... it was a pretty intense experience for me.

Various Final Fantasy games as well as Kingdom Hearts for me as well. The storylines for Bioshock and the Halo series piqued my interest. Radiata Stories and the Suikoden series get an honorable mention.

I just spoiled Silent Hill 2 for myself. Yay! #-o

I thought something was up, but I thought he was just crazy. At least I don't know why there were two Mary's.

That's actually never explained, but there are fan theories. The popular one tends to be that Maria is James' ideal Mary: A more sexual Mary who is willing to "put out" which Mary couldn't really do for James because of her illness. This theory isn't perfect, though, because one of the potential endings.
