Vintage Wines

I don't recall seeing one here, so here goes.

Lots of us know little of wines, and some are even intimidated by the prospect of having to choose a wine for guests.

I keep a few bottles, and I'm not worried about being among the vino illiterati. I'm open to learning, however.

This thread is intended as an ongoing resource. It can be to share a good wine you keep in store, or one you've enjoyed, or one you've bought but not yet sampled, or for any questions about wine. I'm sure we have some refined palates among us who will share their wisdom and tastes.

Also, pictures or links are welcome, as words without drinking with the eye are a bit dry, no pun intended.

My stock is only a couple of dozen bottles, plus some liquors that I keep on hand. Today, I bought a bottle of Valdespino Amontillado Sherry. My aim was to buy a white port, having read about it here in another thread, but the liquor store only carried one variety, which instantly seemed too suspect to me to buy without having a choice of brands or vintages. So, I bought some sherry.

As Edgar A. Poe lived in my hometown briefly, I figured "what could possibly go wrong" with an Amontillado?

I suppose I shouldn't laugh. That's actually quite disappointing. I'd like to think it's actually worth our time to post on this website --- that someone might actually be reading what others have to say.

Fair enough. I did see the thread title but never opened it.

I'll ask a mod to delete this one. It's too embarrassing to even merge them.

Apologies to RB for the blunder.

I don’t think there’s a need to delete it. I don’t always read every thread either.

Yes. It can sink below the mire. Better forgotten. I hope it doesn't taint the Amontillado when I do open it.

I have a little--very little--knowledge of wine, although much of that is knowledge acquired from reading, not any first hand knowledge. For example, I know a bit about what a Burgandy is; however, it's doubtful I have ever drunk a real French Burgundy. I'm told Carlo Rossi Burgundy isn't quite the same. While I've had better wines than Carlo Rossi, there are massive gaps in my experience. And even the better wines were probably nothing remotely resembling great wines. I'd guess the best I've ever had was probably at a free tasting event, with value under $50/bottle. The most expensive I've probably bought was port (at about $20/bottle). My current budget--if I were to buy wine--would be Franzia-level.

At one point in my life, I had a fantasy of "someday" having a small wine cellar--even if only a dark, cool corner of the basement of my tastefully furnished gay guy home. Sadly, said cellar--along with the tastefully furnished home--never materialized.

I always wanted to get into wines, sherries, ports, etc., but never bothered as I dislike the taste of alcohol in general. The little I do drink I prefer more of the fruit taste to the alcohol taste.

Back in the '80's, the advertising agency I worked for threw a retirement party for the CFO at Ivar's Salmon House restaurant.
The server suggested a White Zinfandel for me. Much too sweet, are all Zinfandel's sweet?

Before I die I want to try champagne.

I was offered once but thought it was an odd offer so passed. A coworker at the time offered me some he got on his wedding day. It was close to his one year anniversary. His wife didn't want any and it just seemed inappropriate to me.
