What are some good gay movies?

Shelter was alright but I dont get the praise it gets...

EATING OUT THREE??? IS IT TRUE? I love those movies

is there a movie about 3 gay guys in a love triangle.

None of them are in the closet
none of them are 'queens'
and they're at least in their 20s.

just a movie about characters who happen to be gay and happen to be in a love triangle.

or even a romanit comedy.

or even a scifi lol idk.

Boy Culture is kind of like a love triangle. it is a really good movie.

If you don't mind reading subtitles....Grande Ecole from France comes close. The central character is Bi not gay. It's one of the few movies I've seen with a Bi character. There is also a shower room scene full of naked gays, always a plus.

if im not mistaken, velvet goldmine has only been mentioned once, by somebody who didnt like it. that needs to be corrected! i fucking love that movie.

also, im not sure wether lesbian movies "count", but i always liked bound. now, its not exactly an emancipated movie. its very pulpy and a tad exploitative. but its very well made, and i like how its a thriller with gay protagonists, rather than a movie about being gay.

v for vendetta isnt exactly a gay movie, but gay issues are amongst the themes it deals with, and its strongest, most touching scene is built around a lesbian relationship.

todo sobre mi madre (all about my mother) is my favourite almodovar movie, and like many of his movies, it deals with all kinds of gay and transgender issues.

tillsammans! (together!) is a very sweet, heartwarming movie. it deals with many things, gay and lesbian issues amongst them. its by lukas moodysson, who also directed "fucking amal" ("show me love" in the u.s.), a lesbian coming-out movie which left me a little underwhelmed.

8 femmes (8 women) has some lesbian themes, but more importantly, its a gay dream come true, with all the french bitchyness and candy coloured interior. hilarious!

shortbus has already been mentioned - i recommend it!

may i suggest: serving in silence the colonel cammermeyer story.
deadly skies also called force of impact - with out the gay references.
the donald strachey mysteries: on the other hand, death
shock to the system
third man out.
i did like the 'begging for shorts' 5 short films from j.t. tepnana
and i did like hell bent. which was listed in another post.

Last one(s): Trick. Christian Campbell is lovely and super fine. John Paul Pitoc is gorgeous and hot. And The Fluffer. The guy who colours his hair near the end has one of the best asses I have seen.

And don't forget Coco's cameo. "It burnssssss....."

Luchino Visconti's adaption of Thomas Mann's "Death in Venice"

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4N8B1ggYc4[/ame]

death in venice is a classic ^
although i think that film is way more about the nature of beauty and stuff more than homosexuality

let's see. ones that haven't been mentioned yet or enough:

Party Monster (fucking amazing)
Mysterious Skin (obviously)
Let the Right One In - this films is definitely queer. the swedish subtitle version is best. the american version will probably suck.
THE RASPBERRY REICH
get real
hedwig and the angry inch
shortbus
the dreamers

I just watched a really good one called "Breakfast With Scot." It finds a gay couple who are made temporary custodians of an orphan who was 'willed' to the MIA brother.

It's a nice family movie and has great performances throughout. It felt very real and not forced, like quite a few gay films can be.

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Guy Pearce is hot, and who knew Terence Stamp would be such a beautiful older woman? Great Australian scenery, a gay road trip. There was also a French film from the 70's, 'Pourquois Pas?,' but it's hard to find, very sweet.

I thought I'd bring this thread back to life because watching gay themed films has just recently become a hobby for me. Before that I had not even known most of the popular gay themed independent films.

This is why I started a website where I review films I have seen. (Oh, I see being a new member I'm not allowed to post URLs yet :-)) but anyone who is sincerely interested in checking out the site can PM me :-)

I also have interviews with actors and film makers on the site and a current Top 25. I know a lot of popular films are still missing, but they'll all be added with time. The site is just a hobby, so my time is limited unfortunately.

But any feedback is greatly appreciated. And also of course film suggestions.

Anybody recommend some good gay movies? They're so hard to find.

I agree, so hard to find. Most of them are pretty bad which pains me. I'd say try out European ones, they tend to be better. C.R.A.Z.Y. is a Québecois film and it's about the best gay movie that I've seen because its about a guy that just happens to be gay, its not over the top or full of sex or uber campy. Its real and human. Just like us! ;)

I saw Shelter after reading the thread about it in this forum.
It is now my favourite movie.
Worth seeing.

Shelter is pretty good. I had a friend that used to always go on about how great Trick was, but I've never seen it myself. Maybe someone here has?..............

A movie that you should avoid though is Adam & Steve. It is beyond terrible... and approaches offensive at times.

I think it depends upon your personal definition of "good gay movie."

Most of Hollywood history had gay movie characters as either homocidal freaks or creepy pedophiles and/or suicidal and extremely depressed.

Most gay movie scripts ended in tragedy for the gay character(s).

Most gay characters were not the lead storyline.

It has gotten better in recent years if you steer clear of anything mainstream that may have even the slightest chance of a theatrical run and be seen by (oh, the horror) delicate straight people and their violent, self-absorbed but deny-any-human-sexuality-at-all (until magically at age 18 ) rug rats.

Director James Ivory`s Maurice (pronounced Morris), from the novel by E.M. Forster.

Two I did not see mentioned. First,My Beautiful Launderette(1985) with Daniel Day Lewis great love story. First Gay romance I ever saw. Second, La Cage aux Folles(1978 ),the French original, think this was wacky funny, The Birdcage(1996) with Nathan Lane and Robin Williams is a really good american remake.
