What surprises me most about these threads is how those who profess to not like the aesthetic of tattoos, and who wouldl never get one, always have some amazing in-depth knowledge of the psychology and mindset which goes into getting one. You all must have run some pretty extensive studies to collect your data ;)

Side note: It's not always a matter of "going through" the pain, as often times, the pain in itself is an important part of the entire thing, and can actually be quite enjoyable. I know many people for whom the pain is a big part of the influence in wanting to get more work done.

What I do have is in-depth knowledge of the psychology and mindset of a person who would never get one. I share that as freely as those who enjoy tattoos share their perspective. To me, the experience of pain is not rewarding, necessary or desirable; I prefer to avoid pain in life. The motivations I've heard are unconvincing (right of passage; means of self-expression, marker of life events, visible memory); I prefer to do those things mentally or verbally.

And the results on other people don't often seem spectacular or inspiring. It's a mixed bag. Symbolically, I reject the "permanence" as both illusory and undesirable. And I enjoy practicing the discipline of living within my body as it is, and as it can be autonomously, rather than when it is subject to someone else's craft. I'd caution against assuming people without tattoos don't get it or haven't reflected on it. For some it is a decision and a choice every bit as deliberate and thought-through as for those who have chosen to get one.

All that said, I do occasionally see one I like on others, mostly on the grounds of aesthetics.

Anyway, I can't always tell you why other people have tattoos, but based on what motivations some have shared, and my own understanding of myself, I can tell you why I don't have one.

… I discovered just how amazing and complex and beautiful and totally hot body art can be. …

You still haven't uploaded your picture of your new art so we can get an appreciation of it too.

How about this art?

I could just into an in depth essay about how I appreciate the aesthetic and poetic nuances about someone putting their emotions and memories into their skin. Or, I just find them boner-inducing. The point is that some people like ink, others don't. I don't ask guys who like make up and jewelry to validate their style, so why the hell should I, or you, or anyone for that matter, give body artists the same treatment? It's their bodies and their money.

It's not my "thing" but different strokes as they say.
The thing that I find odd in some cases is where men have spent a lot of money as these tats are expensive, these same guys have to have the latest smart phone with all of the bells and whistles, however they bum a ride to and from work from others as they either can't afford a car or can't afford to get the one that they fixed, you may look cool with your tats, but you don't look cool asking for a ride.

Again...as I said...it must be really horrible to see the world through your eyes. The photos that you post in this thread are like opening a window onto a dark and troubled soul.

If you think this is bad, peek in at some of Telstra's threads. (*S*)

You've been enjoying me for over two and a half years and you haven't even bothered to lift your finger onto the ignore button.

I think you may have misunderstood. I was not trying to imply that those without tattoos, or who would not get them have necessarily never reflected on the idea. I'm not even saying its beyond them to understand the thought proccess or what have you. I'm simply sharing my thoughts on a section of users who likes to come into these type of threads, rail against tattoos, and all the while act as if they know the motivation behind a tattoo better than the person who has it. It was in now ay directed at you :)

As I told you from almost the beginning...I will never take my eyes off of you...because when others may be willing to stay silent in the face of some of your ugly ideas and opinions....and have allowed you in the past to join forces and support myriad of destructive trolls on JUB over the past few years....I will not. I want to know what seeds you are sowing here.

I am glad that you do rareboy...I don't have the stomach for the asshole myself... and have him on ignore.... but I thank you for standing up to him.

..I don't have the stomach .. and have him on ignore....

Well you're the sensible one in this querulous quartet.

Putting JUBbers on ignore is being sensible when we're dealing with people from the other side of the world in quite different cultures.

This role you have assumed for yourself is so obsessively bizarre. You seem to think your ideas and fads are more correct than any others.

You seem to think you have a God-given right to berate people across the globe.

You seem to think you are Holier-Than-Thou and that JUBland is your own special domain.

I am on the side of the angels Grimshaw.

...my targets are those who are steeped in hate and who spread their poison and ugliness of soul every chance they get. And I have no issue with someone being on the other side of the world. After all, it is still one planet. Shared by all.

But bring it on Grimshaw.
