VATICAN CITY (AP) — A document obtained by The Associated Press on Friday shows Pope Benedict XVI defrocked nearly 400 priests over just two years for sexually molesting children.

I wouldn't defrock them were I pope, I'd order them to a monastery for life. Part of their sentence would be manufacturing hand-crafted items to be sold, and the income go to helping abused children.

handing them over to the authorities for prosecution would be better

Don't know much about monasteries, do you? I had a professor who lived in one for two years as part of some research he was doing, and during that time six months was spent in "mandated closure (?)" (or something like that. What it meant was he lived in a part of the monastery where he literally could not leave. He had his own cell, a chapel, the library, and the "restroom" (like an indoor outhouse) he could move around in, and the common dining room at meal time, but that was it. That's where I'm talking about putting these guys -- somewhere with no door knob on their side of the door.

Make it bare stone walls, too.
