I think that it would be interesting to see what $1,000,000 would buy where you live. You can use real estate web sites to find out, like http://www.realtor.com

I live in Los Angeles county and it really varies depending on what part of the county you live in as to what you can buy. The Los Angeles area is actually made up of many cities. Here are a few examples:

Sierra Madre (aprox. an hour from the Ocean):

In London?.. a one bedroom flat (apartment).

OK so I know I don't live in London... but it is expensive over here.

Re: What does $1,000,000USD buy you where you live

My partner and I bought our first home last fall. It's probably in the top 10 nicest homes in our community... we paid $175,000 for it.

A contractor friend of mine came down from Boulder, CO (200 miles from here) and pitched a total fit! He said, without any doubt, if our home had been near Boulder, it would have commanded a price of $850,000 or more!   I about dirtied my undies!

It sits on 2.5 acres, has 4,200 s/f of living space, a deck, walk-out basement, 30,000 gal. in-ground heated pool, fully landscaped, Koi pond with waterfall and creek, etc. and is very nice, but wow! Guess it's true... Location. Location. Location.

(I'm still trying to figure out how I can move the place out there when we sell!!!)

That is truly amazing. The homes in my neighborhood range from 2k to 3700 sq ft on small lots that go to a maximum of 13k square feet. Many of the neighbors have upgrades in their properites of over $200k. Some have put in over $150k in just their small yards. Some have put over $150k in the upgrades inside their homes as well. I get a kick out of seeing what kind of upgrades the neighbors do. And I live on the cheaper side of LA County. The Western side, would be much higher as well as the amount people spend on upgrades.

In Los Angeles County, your property would probably sell for at least $2.7 million.
This is the closest I could find with a quick search....and the house is a teardown... Most of the larger properties in LA, they are building either large estates or breaking them up into more lots.

Re: What does $1,000,000USD buy you where you live

In Cairns, Far North Queensland (Aust), USD1,000,000 would buy you lots, a mansion with sea views, and you would probably get change. A well positioned new house with 4 dbl bedrooms with WIRs, 2 baths, office, pool, outdoor entertainment area, aircon, 2 car lockup garage, auto irrigation etc etc of about say 2,500+ sq ft on a block of 7,500 sq ft would set you back about USD400,000. Auatralian capital cities are more expensive.

Re: What does $1,000,000USD buy you where you live

I live an hour south of San Francisco.

A million bucks would probably get you a 20-40 year old tract house, 1800-2000 square feet, probably with upgrades, on a 6,000 SF lot, and in the best school district.

In San Francisco, you could probably get a 70+ year old house, 1000-1200 square feet, not necessarily upgraded, but in a good neighborhood, no/minimal yard.

Re: What does $1,000,000USD buy you where you live

This is the closest thing to $1m I could find--990,000K

http://statewiderealestate.org/listing.php?&page=2&view=20&id=1071830&list=5

In the UP housing is very cheap, if you are looking to drop a bundle you have to get land with it (the example above has 600+ acres) or be on water--inland lake or either Lake Superior or Michigan.

In the cities and towns, smaller towns are cheaper; the four larger towns are a bit more.

Example #1, my Partner's Mom's house: 3500 SF, 4 bed, 3 bath, 1 car attached garage, hardwood floors, etc, $80K but if it were in a larger town about $120K.

Example #2, my Mom's out in the country: 1200 SF, 1 bed, 1 bath 3 car detached garage on 20 Acres, $90k

Example #3, our house: 3500 SF unrestored Victorian, built 1905, needs roof, windows, doors, siding, foundation, plumbing, etc. 6 bedrooms, 2 baths, plus original miner's shack in back yard (3 bedrooms, no plumbing or electric, built 1873 and last inhabited in 1945), whole thing $20K if the moon and the stars are aligned correctly.

A 5br, 5b, 6300sq ft home on a country club golf course. Here's the link, with lots of pictures. All for $1,095,000.

I'd rather have this for $760,000.

Re: What does $1,000,000USD buy you where you live

Well here in Sydney house prices are ridiculous. So starting at the very top, there was a very large home on a double block of land right on Sydney harbour with a small beach in front for AUD forty six million dollars. I live about 20-30minutes from the CBD and most single standing homes are AUD one million dollars. You would probably get a semi detached 3bed room home for say AUDseven hundred thousand dollars upwards. You can rent a 3bedroom semi for AUDsix hundred and twenty dollars per week.

in NYC, it gets you a studio apartment. Yes, expensive indeed.

Re: What does $1,000,000USD buy you where you live

I found a 6 bedroom, 6 bath three story built in 1994 for $1,050,000 in nearby Dayton. It has a Florida Room, Great Room, Rec Room, Workout Room, Office/Study, and Game Room, in addition to the usual type rooms.

Massively overpriced, if you ask me! I'd be willing to bet you could talk the owners way down from that (obviously bloated) asking price, especially in this market.

Re: What does $1,000,000USD buy you where you live

Okay, this one is a slightly better buy, and closer to me than the house above. It is a 5 bedroom 9 bath (5 full, 4 half) two story offered for exactly $1,000,000. The house was built in 1996 and has 4,268,880 sq. ft. It sits on 98 heavily wooded acres and has a 5 car garage and a sauna.

Obviously a better buy than the house above in Dayton, but still kinda expensive (houses in the city are overpriced)! This home is in the country just south of Dayton, Ohio. (I bet you could still talk them down from that $1,000,000 asking price).
