  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What food is absolutely disgusting to you?

Canned fish. Tuna, salmon, sardines, et al. I like fresh or frozen fish but opening a can of fish is like opening a can of cat food for the cat.

YUM! :D

Guess I'm a bit strange but have not found a food that disgusts me---somethings I prefer over others--but disgust, not really. I grew up a pretty poor family and you ate what was there or there was nothing---absolutely nothing else. My nieces and nephews are so picky--their parents will actually go to a couple of different resturants for take out to make everyone happy.

I can't think of any food that I'm disgusted by; I pretty much enjoy all the foodstuffs mentioned in this thread so far. That being said, I do find the taste of rockmelon/canteloupe horrible - to me it smells as though it's mouldy.

Tuna, Salmon and Shrimp....

Can't stand it. Especially Tuna, makes me feel sick after I eat it.

The list goes on though.

Mm mm..I love all three and usually eat one or more of those in a week, love love love Tuna steaks and love Tuna and Salmon in Sushi. I eat only a pescatarian/vegetarian diet but when I did eat meat back in the day I hated liver and had this crazy irrational fear of chicken drumsticks as a kid..I would cry and scream my head off if my mother ever put it on my plate. I also agree with the previous post about Brussell Sprouts, they are the only vegetable I hate.

WHAT ON EARTH are they?

Haggis! The one time I had it... it was surprisingly good to me. I had it with pita chips.

The only time food has made me sick is when I had clams and oysters. I didn't think they were nasty or anything... they just made me throw up after like 20 minutes after I ate them. I also stay clear of most pork.

Have you ever tried PG Tips Tea? I recently tried it and was hooked instantly, best tea I ever had. I'm more of a coffee addict and haven't completely switched over to tea, but PG Tips has me hooked on two to three cups a day and I cut back on the java to less then four cups. I stumbled upon it at the grocery store and remembered Jennifer Love Hewitt mentioning it in a magazine article.

Found a real gem of Americana last weekend. It's a cookbook of Grange
recipes. For those from other parts of the world (and big US
cities), a grange is an association of farmers++they were big in the
past in the US. This is American heartland cooking++long an canned
stuff and casseroles. The seafood section was understandably
short++two pages in a book of some 300 odd pages. But a couple of
the entries caught my eye. This one for Lutefisk looks particularly
interesting. Any recipe that calls for sawing one of the main
ingredients naturally catches my eye.

Now, I've never had Lutefisk in spite of being half Swedish. Both
sides of my family were busy becoming Americans and none of the
ethnic delicacies made it down to us third generation kids. Being a
full- fledged, All-American boy, I naturally resent being deprived of
my roots and am eager to sue someone for the grievous affront of
never having had lutefisk when I was growing up. Can't for the life
of me figure out who to sue though...

Traditional on Christmas Eve. (Dried Imported Cod)

Saw fish into 3 parts, clean thoroughly and place in a wooden bowl or
pail. Add water to cover and set in a cool place for 5 to 6 days.
Change water each day. Remove fish and thoroughly clean wooden bowl.
Make a solution of water, lime and ashes and allow to stand
overnight. Drain off clear liquid and pour over soaked fish, set in a
cool place for 7 days. When fish is soft, remove from solution, scrub
bowl well and soak fish for several days in cold clear water. Cook
in boiling salted water at simmering temperature for about 20
minutes. Drain well and serve. The Norwegians serve the fish with
melted butter; the Swedes serve it with white or mustard sauce. Allow
1/3 pound per person.

MUSTARD SAUCE:

Melt 1 1/2 T. butter, blend in flour, salt and pepper, add fish stock
gradually, stirring constantly until thickened then cook for an
additional 3 minutes. Add mustard and remaining butter. Serve with
boiled lutfisk, haddock or cod.

Makes 2 1/2 cups sauce.

NOTE: If fish stock is salty do not add salt listed.

Look on "youtube" and in their Search thingy look up John Pinet and see what he has to say about turnips !

My list is relatively small. There are foods I prefer not to eat but of the stuff I find absolutely disgusting there is:

Yogurt
Beats, in any form, pickled, boiled, what have you
Liver, beef or chicken, liverwurst is great though
Any kind of sweet pickle

Canned asparagus, esp. cream-of-asparagus soup. The stench makes me hurl!

KELP, those people on the east coast eat the strangest things, and Sushi I guess the two years in the Maritimes turned me right off most sea food. What the people do in Newbrunswick to what should be healthy food is beyond me. As well Vegimite and Melamite, you Aussies and English also have some strange food habits, Mushy peas anyone.

There are very few things on the 'never ever again' list:

Lima Beans, Brains, Tripe, Tongue. Salmon is on that list too but due to an allergy.

Most everything else depends on the preparation method. A couple of examples:

Hate sweet potatoes but BF's Mom makes this thing with julienned sweet potatoes, parsnips and carrots and stir fried that is amazing.

Hate rutabaga but if it's mashed and mixed 50-50 with mashed potatoes, you get Rootmoose which is really very good.

Hate kidney but adore a good steak and kidney pie (best one ever was in a pub in Winchester, I still remember the name: The Bell. MMMM).

Once during my teen years one of my friends tried feeding me a SPAM sandwich!!! I looked at her and said "Bitch do you need to be slapped, take that dogfood off my plate!!!" We almost died laughing and to this day if we go somewhere and see food that looks disgusting we say "Someone slap this bitch!"

Celery, absolutely vile stuff!!! :bartshock

Seafood, especially the smell!! YUK!! :dead:
