I know according to reports the top 1% earns an average of $300k+ a year, but what is affluent to you? What minimum income is neeed to be considered affluent? What minimum net worth?

The ability to buy at minimum one house in the top 10% of the local real estate market, simply by writing a cheque.

$1,000,000

but more like $5-10 mil to really consider someone affluent

but these days, even that is not enough

$25 million????

I wouldn't necessarily put a specific number to it. It is subjective and different for each person or household. Affluence to me is having more than enough to live a comfortable lifestyle and being able to get or do what one wants without having to worry about their finances.

Here in the US, it depends widely on the area of the country you live in. In some regions of the southeast, $300,000 can buy you a 5 bedroom mini mansion, while that same amount of money won't go very far in the northeast in terms of luxury and exclusivity. At the end of the day, affluence is ultimately about the image you project. It can mean different thing to different people.

Net worth =/= wealth. Hell, I know people that make $150k/year and are $20k in CC debt. Hell, even having a positive net worth puts you above 40% of America.

$300,000 in Louisiana will make you feel like a Vanderbilt, but living "rich" on that salary in prime real estate in NYC, is really about average. But $300,000 is still a lot of money and above what I'd call "upper middle class." To me definition of affluence is minimum of 4 million in net-worth. One of my bosses has a net worth of 19 million and he is not considered rich in his social circles.

By definition.....generously supplied with money, property, or possessions. I don't think you have to be a millionaire to be considered affluent. Affluence is usually associated with above-average earned income or those who inherit wealth or a combination of both. To me, affluence is having enough money to not worry about money anymore. You live how you want to live, where you want to live and do what you want to do and have what you want...without regard to how much it will cost.

When I think of the word "affluent", I think something along the lines of somebody who might think "You know what? I think I'll go spend next week in (some distant place)", and can make it happen without majorly impacting his/her bottom line.

The affluent have an uncommon level of comfort and financial security. In the most concise definition the affluent have sufficient resources to indulge in luxuries such as large single family homes in desirable locations, second homes, luxury cars, designer clothes, fine dining, and travel.

The affluent store their wealth in the economy itself, which is how they come to own it and grow even more wealthy.

The affluent do not necessarily have more access to leisure time, but have more options on how to spend it.

The affluent do not have to worry about mundane things that most people worry about such as coupon clipping, utility bills, health insurance (in the US), and grocery budgeting. Jacking the heat in the house to 76F in the dead of winter is a total non-issue for them as are sales at the supermarket.

As far as a monetary amount, a household income in Maryland at $100,000 after taxes would be able to afford most of the above, but that depends heavily on location. That salary in Harbor East, Baltimore probably would not go far, but it would afford a lavish lifestyle in one of the rural counties.

Being able to afford non-essential stuff is luxury, so affluent is that and being able to flaunt it and still have three square meals on your table.

Okay more definitions are required.

What is essential? Is it just food, clothing, and shelter?

I would define "essential" as water, food, shelter, energy, transportation, and health care. Clothing is optional. (!) (!w!)
