What is it with gay men growing beards?

I feel like a lot of gay guys are very trendy with things that are stereotypical masculine features like beards, body hair, etc.

For example, body hair is like glorified in gay porn. Everytime I see a photo spread of a model who is smooth or shaved, I see a bunch of complains. I also notice a lot of beards, handlebar mustaches, etc. are very popular with the "bear community".

I sort of feel like it's an overcompensation for being gay. Ie. "society views gay as effeminate so non feminine features used to break the illusion."

It doesn't really work that way though because masculinity and femininity aren't defined by the way you look.

Just my two cents.

This is a very recent trend. For years it has been different and even today the biggest part of gay porn features smooth models. Imho the only reason that this is somewhat changing is because the straight guys are adapting the all around smooth look.

In all my vast 15 years (heh heh) of being out, one truism I've found, is that for every guy bitching about fems, fats, queens, hirsute, shaved, bald, daddies, et al, infinitum..... it says far more about the person claiming the entirety of the gay community does/says/wants/looks like ________________ than it actually does about the community. It immediately tells me this particular gay person has a hangup/fetish/aversion/self-delusion towards whatever type they just blathered on about.

Just sayin, is all. ..|

Good theory. It's probably true in most cases.

The worst part is, you can see it everywhere. Especially on sex sites like adam4adam, manhunt, etc.

100% true. e-hug (*8*)for MR3.

The only reason I shave my face is because my work has a "dress code".

beards: not my favourite.

it's sad times for me right now because it is part of the hipster fashion trend going on. Add a pair of ridiculously heavy-rimmed glasses and I'm pretty much done.

i like them very occasionally but generally speaking i don't think they flatter people's looks, and 4 times out of 5 if you show me a pic of someone with and without beard, I dig the "without."

Beards don't look bad but only certain guys can pull them off without looking like a twat.

I grew a beard because Kings of England had one.

If you allowed your brain to perform its normal functions, you will understand that too.

Like any other physical feature, it depends on the guy how good it looks.

the metrosexual look is over and dead. some women were simply attracted to gay men for the longest time, gay men were defining what 'hollywood' taught women to be attracted to and we are now shifting away from that.

i love some hair on a guy, i love the feeling of stubble or a somewhat furry chin. imagine what it would feel like on your butt ;)

Have any of you noticed this new trend among gay men?
This is what's wrong.

Bearded gay men have always existed, see 70s porn or read about Greek history. Some gays now heard or saw that a beard is the latest trend and because they're too vain to grow a proper beard and do it for fashion reasons, they get a three-days beard to look rugged but not a full one like those men who always had a thing for beards.

^ Same here. The only reply I can give is "well, good for you".

At my college, almost all of the gay guys are growing beards. I'm even noticing it among gay guys in porn too.

While goatees on some guys may look hot, I am not a fan of the "lumberjack" looking beard. I think it's funny that gay guys are suddenly trying to grow beards. What's even more hillarious is when these bearded gay guys open their mouth, they still speak with a lisp or a high-pitched voice.

I'm like, gurl, who are you trying to kid? Just because you grow a beard does not make you more "manly." It's like they're trying to make their facial hair compensate for their lack of masculinity.

I personally like clean-cut, cleanly shaven men......

Please...

At the risk of incurring the wrath of our beloved Corny, the beard in particular, and the personal grooming in general(i.e. body hair, manscapping, etc) is *me* thing. *I* am growing a beard because *I* like it, *I* like the look and feeling of the hair on *my* face.

I know that some people don't like facial hair at all, some are tolerant, most are indifferent and some like it very much. I am just doing to my face what I think is best. It's all very subjective, of course, because you can't ask me to be objective (I am not an object, but a thinking subject). I can readily accept that other might not like what they see when they look at me, but I am not styling my hair and my beard for them, and I expect them to show me the same respect as I am showing them in regard of their hair style...

Yeah but you keep your beard well groomed and not as crazy as mine. My facial hair looks like someone laid their hairy nut sack on my face and left their pubes on my chin...

Some guys look good with a beard, but it's a romance killer, unless you like kissing a Brillo pad..

Not for everyone... Given a choice, I prefer kissing a furry face rather then a smooth one... Once again, it's question of personal tastes!
