What is new on the Gay Marriage front?

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a UU/UCC/Episcopal minister in those areas with a "pay what you can" offer for gay couples.

14 counties in Florida have ended ALL courthouse weddings, in order to avoid marrying gays.

They will still be issuing licenses, they just won't be doing the weddings.

This is just like many communities did to stop having to integrate their public swimming pools. They closed the pools to everyone [-X

If you recall, during the civil rights movement in the 1960s, there were counties in southern states which completely stopped operating public schools, in order to avoid having to integrate them. They set up all-white "private" schools (supported by state tuition vouchers) which attempted to get around court-ordered integration.

I really lit into a post by an elected official from Indiana in trying to introduce legislation to permit small businesses to just say no - not my belief, see ya, sucker.

Here is a map of how things stand, at the moment.

Still weird to me how all fourteen "no" states are ENTIRELY connected into ONE unified mass, though not all in one region.

Goddam MICHIGAN shouldn't be on this fucking map...NO WAY!!! It's *ALL* because of who runs their government there (as well as a bad decision by that Circuit which guarantees the SCOTUS hearing the arguments).

The minute I saw the panel from the 6th, I knew they would rule against us.

It's easily the most liberal/supportive state to not have marriage equality.

I've listened to the audio and read all the reports.. we could actually get a win out of the 5th Circuit.
I expect to see the pigs flying out of my window at any moment.

Mine, too. I've voiced very similarly to my Indiana relations on Facebook - as they bemoan "Obamacare" and this and that - voting their Tea Party candidates, THEN suddenly finding out their state representatives want to take away local governments' abilities to regulate BIG Agri's Pig factories - guess what - that's what they are all about.

FALSE bull shit.

Not sure if this is an appropriate thread for this or not, but the columnist nails the "my religious beliefs trump your civil rights" issue :gogirl:

These people always strike me as thinking their God is a wimp. How can it harm them to have someone around who disagrees with them? Folks who want to keep gays out of their stores are no different than the morons who shoot people for drawing pictures of Mohammed: they're afraid their God can't take care of Himself.

The crazy part for Christians is that the Gospels show a Jesus who not only let the "unclean" touch Him, but turned them "clean" by letting them. His example would say the bakers and whoever should be thrilled to have gays come into their stores, because if they're really Christians, people just might see Jesus there.

It's written that perfect love casts out all fear. By their own measure, they must be assessed as having lousy love.

In addition it really illustrates how their faith in general is weak.

Indeed. Also, it's likely they will actually issue a ruling and not put it on hold since both the plaintiffs and defendants (at least in the Texas case) have both requested such.

South Dakota's gay marriage ban has been struck down

Here is an (amazingly detailed) map of where gay marriage is supported and opposed in America
Most interesting is that strange orange district in central Texas, which for the most part doesn't have large cities in it. However, I'm not quite sure what it's doing around Austin, and it's hard to tell what parts of that metropolis are in it. ) Ah, I see...I zoomed in...it splits the city. Strange district.

That's Gerrymandering for y'all.

Also rather surprised that Idaho is not a fairly deep blue/purple state.

This is from a post on Equality on Trial:

"So you all may know (I've posted it before on a amicus curie) I have a good friend in family law here in South Florida. Well we are all from Michigan, where he has family there in law that are part of the DeBoer v. Snyder case (for the pro-ME side). He emailed me and said that they (counsel) received word from the SCOTUS this morning that they will advise on Friday 1/16 if review is granted.

I have no doubt that this was relisted for Friday as to determine which case is the appropriate vehicle to close this chapter! Can't wait to see which case(s) are selected from the four! Hell, take all four, affirm all lower court judgements, reverse the 6CA (adios SUTTON/COOK!) , and put Baker into the dustbin of history!"

I hope this is true!!!:gogirl:
