What is the quickest way to get rid off Telemarketers ?

The quickest way to get rid of telemarketers is to discontinue telephone service.

That's really the only way. You can be on all the "do not call" lists, you can have an unlisted phone number, you can have caller ID and all that jazz, but you'll still get robo-calls. The robo-calls get around the no-call rules by having an option to press a button to no longer receive calls from that company; but the information as to which button to press is at the end of the message, after you've heard their speil.

My solution is that I just don't answer the phone unless I recognize the caller-ID. So much easier than any of the above.

And I implore you, please do not be rude to telemarketers. They already have the shittiest job in the entire world, I mean even Mike Rowe wouldn't touch that mess... nobody would be a telemarketer if s/he had a choice to do something else. They are more to be pitied than censured, and there's no point in making it worse for them.

Four words...

I. Don't. Speak. English.

That's the best suggestion yet, braex27 ... and Telstra, who authored this thread should take that on board.

The good thing is, if he used your idea, he wouldn't be lying!!

By law here in Canada, there must be access to a real person to ask that your phone number be removed from their call list or, failing that, a mechanical way of doing it. If the company fails to remove your number from the list and you receive another call from them, you can report them and they can be fined and their service discontinued.

I hadn't heard of this part of the law before. That's good to know as I've often wondered how I'm supposed to tell the company to take me off their call list when the call has been computer generated.

I have been successful in getting companies to remove my number from the call list and I've also reported a few companies that kept calling me after I told them to take me off their list.

When I do get a person I (amazingly) try to not be rude. The telemarketer has a job and he/she is just doing. I always say I'm not interested and hang up. The only exception to this is when I get a call about a political survey. I like to answer political surveys so I stay on.

*phone rings*

Me: "Hello?"
Them: "Hi, this so-n-so with such-n..."
Me: *Hangs up*

Fast and easy.

I hang up straight away.

I hate it when they trick you into staying on the phone. They ring me and ask 'How are you today?' so I feel like I have to answer then they start trying to sell or give me that loan I've always wanted so then I have to say no. Sneaky bastards, making me talk to them

They really do have a shitty job though. Everyone hates them.

It's been in the pages at the front of the Bell phone books (you know, the pages nobody ever reads) for decades. ;)

I ask them for their home phone number so that I can call them back later when I don't have my hands full.

I politely tell the caller I'm on the Do Not Call Registry and to please remove my number from their list. I've had far fewer telemarketer calls since the registry started.

I try to be nice to the person on the other end of the line because they already have a really sucky, really low-paying job.

good point. Thats why i politely say "leave the number, the correct person will call back" and they hang up on me.

im on the do not call list and don't get any calls at all.....works great!

That works as long as you're talking to a real person. Do you not get the voice-recorded calls (mostly for credit cards) which don't give you an option to have your name removed?

a sure fire way is to have caller ID
secondly pic up then hang up before they begin

In the past I have been known to just say "oh fuck off" and put the phone down if they get too aggressive with me. With some of them it feels like they are trying to bully you into saying yes to whatever it is they're flogging. I won't be bullied in my own home!

my chinese friend taught me a couple sentences in toi san. after a couple words, they hang up and never call again.

I have caller ID. I don't answer the phone if I don't recognize the number. Otherwise, they can leave a message on the recorder.

Sorry I just don't understand everyones' strange solutions. What is so difficult about saying politely "Sorry I am not interested" and then hanging up?

tried that already.
They just say " wait and blah blah blah ........" which waste more time for both sides.

Once they find out it's you elvin they'll jump through the phone line to hit that. :p
