What is the quickest way to get rid off Telemarketers ?

Thanks to caller ID, I answer the phone dramatically crying "Why?!" Then launch into a tirade about having murdered my brother after discovering he was cheating on me with our sister...

I must be banned by the telemarketers because I haven't had any such calls in the last 6 months or so...

mikey

That works as long as you're talking to a real person. Do you not get the voice-recorded calls (mostly for credit cards) which don't give you an option to have your name removed?

Now that I'm on the registry I rarely get telemarketers calling at all. But I also let my answering machine screen most calls, so any voice recorded calls would go there.

I do feel telemarketing callers have a lousy job and I don't want to be nasty with them. But those robo-calls and robo-dialers really piss me off.

Sorry I just don't understand everyones' strange solutions. What is so difficult about saying politely "Sorry I am not interested" and then hanging up?

because they still call back if you do that.

Has anyone here ever worked as a telemarketer? Seriously, I get that we can be annoying, but some people just do it because they don't have any other jobs available, and sometimes the pay is good. Not to mention, you should really differentiate between people merely conducting consumer surveys, and people who are actually trying to sell you things. I've worked as a telemarketer for 2 summers, after other jobs fell through. So, about 5 months full time in total. Sometimes the people I would call, especially the second summer, actually wanted the stuff we were selling and expected our call. Putting yourself on a DNC list doesn't always work because a lot of times, we get your numbers from other companies. So, if you've ever given your number out for some business, that business will sell your number to another business that offers a related service. It's a lame job, and if you say you're not interested, that should be enough - there's no need to be an asshole.

Although, I have to admit, as soon as I become fluent enough in the language where I live, I doubt I'll ever do that kind of work again. Hope not.

" I understand that you are doing your job. I am glad you have managed to keep one in this economic recession. However, I am not interested in any product/ advertising via phone. Thank you. Goodbye"

(with some variations...)

That's the best way!

I got on the do not call registry some years ago and the calls generally don't come.

A few remain and each requires different handling.

The offshore Extended Warranty on the Car offer gets a hangup (I mean, I'm driving a 22 year old K CAR for God's Sake! The thing was out of warranty sometime in the last millenium! Chrysler barely offered a warranty on it to begin with!)

I am still flummoxed by the Disabled American Veterans Robo-call. If I don't answer, the computer dials automatically every two hours for at least 3 days between 9 AM and 9 PM until I answer. And it requires that I listen to the ENTIRE message or the cycle begins again. At the end of the message, there is a phone number to call to be removed from the list; if I call that, either the number is disconnected or 'The Office is Closed, please call back during Normal Business Hours,' which is evidently NEVER.

There are a few others (the ARC/CP fundraiser, the Lupus fundraiser, and the Healing Minds fundraiser). They get a brief 'Not Interested' and a hang up.
