What is the WORST state in the USA?

I've been to afew US states: lived in Boston, Massachusetts and San Francisco. and been to Nevada, Maine, New York, Conneticut, New Hampshire, and North Carolina. All these states i liked.

The two coasts seemed to show different ideologies: east coast the learned, historical, traditional side and the west coast superficial, beach culture. not to say they're stupid, but thats just the general impressions i got from living on both of them. but wat does the middle show? mediocrity and avergeness?

i would never bother going to any of those states in the middle, wat do they hav to offer me? wat is thr? grand canyon or colorado mountains but thats about it....
 
Since my dad was in the military and I've lived in and visited 41 of the 50, I'd definitely have to say Montana. Is there even a point to that state? Also, Alabama sucks pretty bad (no offense to those who live there...
 
Well, when driving I-95 between NC and New England my friends and I used to call Delaware the 'Worst State' as a pun on its official nickname of the 'First State'. In general though, I can't think of a state that doesn't have at least some redeeming quality.

It's funny how you describe the two coasts. Personally, I find that while the east coast has its charms in general it's too conventional, formal and often pretentious. I like the general relaxed and independent vibe of the west coast better, but I grew up here. Outsiders often refer to that vibe as 'crazy'. After living away from here for several years, it became clear to me that it is really a bit crazy but that I have that same craziness in me and so it works better for me.

I grew up in southern California (3 miles from the beach), but now I live in Seattle. It's still the west coast, but obviously much less beachy and superficial because of the difference in weather.

To answer your original question... the middle states do offer something. Generally, they're just not as interesting from a tourist perspective. There are a number of cities which have a good quality of life and thus can be good places to live. Unfortunately that's not as true if you happen to be gay, although there still are some good pockets.

Good Lord.... a young dude from Australia no less, commenting on a country as vast as the USA. Now, we all know the vast cultural experiences available in Austuralia. Most of the country has a superficial beach culture on the coasts. What does the middle show? Well, nothing as a matter of fact.
I'm very happy that our freind from Brisbane doesn't bother to visit the heartland of the greatest country in the world. What do we have to offer him anyway?
Couldn't be that the culture of the Navajo Indians, the largest American Indian tribe living in the Four Corners area would have anything to offer. The beauty of the area the live in wouldn't interest our young friend. Cathedral Valley, Rainbow Bridge, Monument Valley..... some of the most beautiful areas on this planet. Yellowstone National Park, with the geysers and wild bison herds, elk herds running free.... the beauty of the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. How about the Black Hills in the Dakotas? Chicago, one of the greatest cities in the world? Utah alone has five National Parks.... how about Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the central USA.
Man, you seem to be a very pretentious and superficial dude. So you've seen it all huh? Well, you've seen almost nothing. There is much more to this great than you've experienced. I hope you enjoy your provincial life in Brisbane. Maybe you will be happy raising sheep for the rest of your life.

That's such an ignorant statement, it really bothers me. The "middle" is what produces nearly all of the nations food supply and billions of dollars of various food exports to the rest of the world.

What does Australia have to offer? Endless miles of desert? Blistering heat and nothingness?

Jimmy, you would have a fine time in the USA.
This is a country of 300,000,000 people. You know how the news stories are, they focus on the shootings and other bad stuff.
Any city or state you choose to vacation in will be a fine place to visit. And friend, you will be safe whereever you choose to go.
This is a big country.... just depends on what sort of thing you want to see.
Man, if you ever want to come to our country with you friends or family, just send me a pm and let me know what you want to do. I will personally find the literature and send it to you. If you want to hike, fish, ski, see the cities, look at the beautiful Western USA just let me know.
There is no finer country on this earth to visit than the USA man. So much to see and do.

it is apparent by your posting that you have little/no couth and your slam of the west coast of the country only betrayed your ignorance of the geographical delights to be found there.

the west coast is 'laid back' as compared to the east coast, probably because the weather is the same 'relaxed'. middle america has gorgeous scenery, fabulous destinations and is food basket to much of the world.

your belligerent attitude and negative comments came as a surprise. the aussies i know all have much better manners and more class than you've displayed this date.

JUST STAY HOME and everybody will be happy.

BTW, we don't have a worst state, each one has its' own special charms and attractions.

I haven't been in very many states, and I feel myself rather shallow and hateful when I say I dislike a state that I've barely even seen... so it was gratifying to see my top two in the first two posts.

Perhaps it was because we drove there non-stop, but I didn't think Montana at all attractive. Butte in particular looked like a mudhole. Utah and Nevada I pretty much slept through, though what I saw of them was rather drab. They call it Big Sky Country because that's pretty much all you can see. And call me hard-to-please, but a sky isn't very interesting to look at.

On another trip, to the East Coast, driving by myself from the Jersey Shore to Mannassas VA and back by a circular route involving the Lewes-Cape May Ferry, I was not impressed by much of what I saw. I'm not sure what it was about Delaware that made me so uneasy, aside from the 35 mph speed limit and the complete lack of anything to look at, but stuck in my mind as quite the most unpleasant of the states I visited that trip.

But then, I am aware that you don't get much of the flavor of a place when you just drive through. I know that people driving through Oakland don't get a very nice view of the place, since none of the pretty parts can be seen from I-880. So I reserve judgement.
 
I live in Kentucky and I loathe it. I'm sure that some people will love Kentucky, but it isn't everyone's cup of tea. I love Maine and Maryland and most of the New England states. Washington (the state) is also very nice. Tennessee is nice too if you can look past all of the Christianity paraphernalia lol
 
as far as i'm concerned there are two parts of america... New England and the other stuff.

lets just say that I'm quite fond of New England. ;)
