The one leader they had that was close to decent got assassinated. However, she (Benzair Bhutto) also had many faults including taking many steps to increase nuclear weapons production. On the plus side, She did try to modernize several aspects of Pakistani society, including with the education system... but many of the measures fell short. Ultimately though she was seen as too close to the West...
BreakTheIce is correct about Pakistan's dire educational system... and ignorance is perpetuated. Madrassas (also spelled Madrasah) are often seen as the only way to get an "education", and that's a big problem as many become extremists through such "institutions". These are part of the continuing problem with extremism and must be reformed.

I don't see anyone in Pakistan having the political will to tackle these problems. And many of its leaders are grossly corrupt. Their present leader Ali Zardari is totally utterly incompetent. The same thing goes for
India... which suffers from endemic corruption.
