Well, I'm back on the market and I'm trying to step up my first date game. I usually just take the guy out to a nearby bar and we talk and get a tipsy and talk some more, but I guess that's not terribly romantic. I wonder how many of us care about romance like that though. I've kinda been working under the assumption that a good chunk of - if not most gay guys - only care about first dates inasmuch as it allows them to go home with a guy without feeling too slutty about it. I could be wrong about that though.

But anyway, where do you guys prefer to go on first dates?

Somewhere fun, public, and new. Movie dates are well and good and the whole restaurant thing is safe for the next... but i'd rather go go-kart riding, a comedy show, an old school arcade... a picnic in a comfy spot or a jazz club for a poetry reading. Take a swim in the lake(or in my case a dip since I can't fucking swim).

Or hell, lets get in the pit. Something... else.

I don't think of "ideal" though... I think of "fresh".

I like to both interact with the date toget to know him, but also have something else to fall back on when the conversation lags (which it can on first dates). So I'm not crazy about movies (can't interact) and not big on bars (not much else going on). I like ambling through a mall or museum, or the zoo. Maybe a bar on trivia night. A fun cheap one is to rent lousy movies (I like social guidance films from the 40s and 50s), make some fun appetizers or main dishes (spam casserole), then just have fun watching and laughing.

A gun range, Motorcycles, nature activity, fishing/yacht.

I'm kinda butch when it comes to doing things with other people.

Solo I like to stay inside and play video games/Eat/Work out but I can man out every once in awhile.

Going out on a boat would be fantastic.

I like to go dancing, or to a museum, or out for long walks! ^.^

Coffee house for me. You can learn a lot about someone in a 1-hour conversation.

A highway rest stop

With or without sex?

Btw, DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT GO BOWLING ON A FIRST DATE!!

It's super awkward and you have to take turns and you cant really talk because someone bowls and someone just stands there....

Never really had a first date with a guy. It was always sex first, date afterwards.

But with women:
art galleries and art walks
art museums
classical concerts
lectures
small theater
independent and foreign films
hiking
beach

I always avoided a whole evening devoted to dining.

I have a straight friend who's now dating after a divorce and he loves running so he invites women to go on a run, with a coffee afterwards.

Coffee dates have always been disastrous for me. The few that I've been on weren't at all conducive to fun or passion, and just ended up being sterile and interview-like. And I can't really even imagine having, say, a hot makeout session after a successful coffee date.

Beach, anything outdoors... I hate the classic coffee or dinner date.

Went iceskating on a first date once, went rather well, both of us could barely manage to stand up, let alone move.
Both of you could barely manage to stand up, let alone move...from iceskating? Or from the rough sex immediately after iceskating?

In spring - outdoor fire, beer... stars... awesomeness...

Winter - Hot springs followed by food. There are usually lots of people in popular hot springs, but it's definitely conducive to conversation.

Summer - go-karts, automobile races, hiking, fossil hunting, nerdy engineer type things.
