What kind of souvenirs do you buy while on vacation?

I don't think I ever paid more than $5 for one. I've been lucky to find many on clearance racks for $1 or $2.
 
I prefer everyday things which are commonplace there but unusual or impossible here. I'd buy dish soap and be happy with it if it was a brand I hadn't seen before. The UK has "Fairy Liquid" and I'm still in awe. That stuff kicks Palmolive's ass based on the name alone.

We visit California 3 times each year and I bring back French hand soap and Coffee from Trader Joe's. They aren't souvenirs but like bankside said they're items I can't buy here
 
Nearly always T-shirts. I have a ton of them, and I love getting new ones from new spots. I actually prefer the horrible tourist-y ones, and I'm not sure I like them ironically. :)

On my last vacation I bought a little snowglobe in a souvenir shop. Not thinking while packing to leave, I put it in my carry-on bag. Big mistake! While going through screening at the airport, the snowglobe set of an alarm due to the liquid content and my bag was seized for hand-screening. Luckily the security guard was cool about it once he realized it was just a snowglobe. He said I could either wait while it was tested or allow them to confiscate it. Since I was already running late, I arrived home souvenir-less. Lesson learned: Put it in my checked baggage next time.

Around here one goes for about $5. I think $13 was the most I paid for a single shot glass while on vacation.


I don't buy basic shot glasses though.

If you buy enough UPS is a great way to get your things home.
 
I don't shop a great deal when on vacation. I like to enjoy the scenery and just relax. I like to purchase refrigerator magnets.
 
I shop wherever I am... home or away. I have in the past had to check my luggage at the airport on the return trip because I had too much stuff and couldn't get it into my carry-on.

But I always always get a coffee mug and a fridge magnet wherever I go, and a postcard to bring back to work (I never mail them, I'd get there before the card does... I just fill them out and bring them with me). And I like to pick up a few cheap things for friends and coworkers if I go somewhere that has cool stuff... like Disneyland or whatever.
 
I used to buy a lot of little things with the destination's name plastered on them (keychains, magnet, T-shirts, etc.) but then I started treating myself to one nice (although not necessarily expensive) item from each locale, often a piece of art or something representative of the area.

Unlike the small things that often get lost or forgotten, these items then go in my living room. I was pleasantly surprised one day when I had new friends over and we had an entire lengthy conversation about all the cool items in my apartment and I could tell about all the places I'd been where I had gotten them.
 
I always buy some sort of Christmas ornament for the tree and t-shirt/sweatshirt. Friends also buy me Christmas ornaments as well when on vacation. I love to shop while on vacation and have shipped home via UPS on several trips. Is's a lot easier then dealing with security or extra cost of the overweight bag.
 
souvenirs? nope. the last souvenir i brought was some liquor for my boss at my job. before that, it was rolling papers that i forgot to flush down the toilet along with the weed that i did flush down the toilet i got while i was in toronto. the customs officer in buffalo gave me that mean look when he was asking us "so what are you doing with rolling papers in your bookbag?" i was like, i was smoking some tobacco. he let us go. with that said, no more weed smoking for me.
 
Another shot glass collecting couple here. :lol: Also magnets, playing cards, and stuffed animals. We have a bar that's jungle themed with lotsa fake critters. ;)

I now try to buy something hand made from where I am visiting. On my trip to Alaska I got some birch bowls. On my trip to Spain, I got a cazuela
 
An ornament for my Christmas Tree. I set my tree up early in November and take it down the third week of February (Washington's Birthday - I have off that day). I enjoy seeing the reminder of the place that I visited.
 
Keychains. I have dozens and dozens of keychains for cities all over Canada and the USA. It started when I was a kid and my aunt sent me a keychain with a picture of the CN Tower and Sky Dome when she was living in Toronto.
