I am posting this because of what I see on a daily basis from my work. I am an RN. I work in a large hospital and rotate from the ER to surg/med.
Yesterday I watched a very handsome 29 year old male die in the ER ( we think ) from a very dangerous drug mix of prescription drugs and over the counter drugs.
An autopsy will tell more.

A brief history on him...He was a diabetic and had taken his insulin. He also was suffering with depression and had taken his meds for that. He had also taken an adavan.

He was playing tennis when he collapsed. While he was able to talk with us he told us he had drank two bottles of the five hour energy drinks plus a 24oz. can of some type mega energy booster drink, we really never understood what he was calling it. Remember he was a diabetic....All those were packed full of sugar and caffeine for energy. His blood sugar was over 300 when brought in. His heart rate was off the charts. He went into cardiac arrest and passed....what a shame!

We were also told by his wife that he had smoked some pot earlier in the morning.

We live in a drug induced world now, whether prescription drugs or illegal or over the counter.

We really need to be careful on mixing and matching any drugs.

It really boggles my mind sometimes when I am getting drug info from new admitt's or in the ER as to how many drugs people are taking. And it's all ages from kids to the elderly.

Please be careful folks..... It's not all the doctors fault either....you wouldn't believe how many people will demand drugs from their doctors and will accuse them of not doing their jobs if they don't.

Then you have all those who hop from one doctor to another and never tell the doctors what kind of meds he or she is on from another doctor.

I guess it's work related stress as for posting this....but dang ...29 is just too young to die due to these kind of things.

I'm using carbamazepine (600mg) for epylepsie ( for the last 4 years).. I'm waiting for an other brain scan to see if i can stop it.

My Doc told me that it is a powerful medication and side effects start to show up later in life.

i'm kind of scared of it, but i stay in touch with my Doc. :(.

take care! you don't have an easy job and i know how it can be hard .

I don't take anything from oxy cotton to allergy meds

I just can't do it.

All natural here baby. It is how I feel about food and losing weight I'd rather eat french fries and hamburgers till the day I die that were cooked with no chemicals and harsh oils than anything made with chemicals or artificial sweeteners.

Now to think of in-taking something made straight up out of chemicals?

I'd rather die

I'm not going to lie though, if I get into a car accident. Morphine plz.

Doing a nice purge after that hospital visit.

not taking any medication, i dont have any serious condition, and if i have a cold or im not feeling well i just sleep it out. i drink alcohol socially and do party drugs sometimes... like, about four times a year or so. its just a very cool experience, i think its ok if you do it responsibly.

I'm not taking any medication only antibiotics for my tooth and Advil to stop the pain.

im suppose to be on adderall but i hate it......and im on pain killers for a torn acl

but in my passed messed around with ecstasy and weed

im an recovering addict

I'm mildly addicted to caffeine. I don't drink coffee - just diet soda - but if I stop for several days, I do get the caffeine headache.

I take a Prilosec each night to stop my silent acid reflux, which usually results in me waking up violently as acid starts up my throat. (Yes, yuck.)

I was on a mild anti-depressant during my last bout of depression, which I think was two years ago now. I weaned myself off it fairly quickly, with no main effects.

...that's about it.

Lex

My mother was a nurse.

My uncle was the VP of a drug company.

I didn't choose my parents wisely and was gifted with some hereditary medical conditions.

Just say yes to drugs.

I'm covering all the meanings of the word DRUGS here - both prescriptions/OTC stuff, and illegal/recreational drugs.

I get a flu shot every year (yeah I think that counts), though this past season I never got the H1N1 shot, only the regular one.

I take a statin for cholesterol, and I take linisopril for blood pressure. I also use aristocort (an ointment) for dry, chapped and cracking skin - in the colder months - I'm near the end of that until November.

That's all for regular prescriptions, though rarely I'll use an Ambien for sleeping.

I won't have alcoholic beverages for weeks or even months at a stretch, and I drink the equivalent of less than a case of beer per year. Coffee is one of those things I'll have occasionally, but I only think of it during road trips, never at home. It is extremely rare that I'll drink anything alcoholic other than beer or a glass of wine, perhaps once or twice every five years or so, and most often it's kahlua.

And as far as illegal drugs, it's only pot, and that's pretty rare, because my usage is entirely social. So I must be visiting with somebody else who uses pot, and I'll readily use it then. But pot is a big "time hog" and I'm too busy to use it at home and throw the entire day away, which invariably happens with it. I haven't even HAD any stash at home for at least 7 or 8 years.

The "heaviest" that I ever used drugs was during the couple years just before I turned 30, I was very much a pothead, though even then it wasn't every day. There's never been a time when I used very many prescription and/or over the counter drugs, though I take a number of dietary supplements and herbs.

I've hardly even TRIED other illegal drugs. Opium once (I didn't like it, all I did was fall asleep), mushrooms maybe three times (not sure I ever got "properly" high from them), hashish a handful of times in the Seventies. I once had the opportunity to try cocaine, and twice the opportunity to try crack, but I said no thanks...

the only prescription drug i've taken in the last 15 years was an 8 day cycle of penicillin to get rid of a tooth infection prior to a root canal. i don't like pharmaceuticals that much.

i do however vigilantly take vitamins, some amino acids and a few other supplements.

Here's my list.

Weed - Been smoking it forever now. Helps me relax.

Alcohol - My worst addiction by far. I am trying my hardest to stop all together but it's very difficult. My body is begging me to stop so if I can just get my brain to listen things will look up for me big time. My doctor thinks I drink to deal with depression and I do believe he's partly right.

Atenolol - For high blood pressure and mild anxiety.

Zoloft - Minimal dosage for mild depression.

That's it for me cept for some ibuprofin for the occasional ache or pain. No other hard drugs, thank God. No caffeine either. The headaches are not worth the slight lift in energy.

That is sad mate. I am sure the guy KNEW that those drinks were loaded with sugar and that due to his diabetes he should not have them. I don't understand why people with such illnesses do such things.

I work in the medical field and such things cross my path daily, so do ODs. I don't get it personally. Just not my thing.

What part do drugs play in my own life?
Illegal - none (other than work).
Prescription - only when absolutely necessary which for me is rare.
Over the Counter - only when required which is not often.

I prefer not to put such chemicals into my body if I can.

have you talked to your doctor about the anti-epilepsy drug lamotragine (brand name in the U.S. was Lamictal); it's now generic and the best generic version is the manufacturer TARO (the generic from TEVA is crap!!).

It also has benefits as an energizing anti-depressent that is safe for manic depressives because of its mood stabilizing action.

thanks i will look into it :)

it's all moderation,

like i just don't drink coffee at all anymore

but i replaced it with hot chocolate, so i'm still getting that little hot water wake up call,

and when i rolle a joint, i cut it in half because seriously, i'm high before i finish a joint, you can't get any higher than high,

and on days that i work, i smoke twice a day, and my days off, 3 times a day,

i like to have a joint after lunch before i brush the chompers.

Currently I'm taking Nadolol (high blood pressure), Relpak, (anti migraine), Seroquel (sleep) and Suboxone (for opioid addiction).

As many of you know I am an addict. Been clean for 2.5 years. Started with alcohol and stopped drinking for a couple of years on my own. Then I cross addicted and started on opioids. Anything from Vicodin, Lortab, Percocet, Oxycontin, Kadian, Fentanyl and many more. At my peak I would take 30 vicodin a day and still be functional. The physicians are amazed that I still have a liver that is working normally. With all of the Tylenol that is in Vicodin, Percocet and the others I should be dead. Guess the good lord still has something for me to do. With the help of Suboxone I've been able to stay clean. I abused opioids for over 12 years and couldn't stay clean for more than a couple of months. Suboxone has been a miracle for me.

Never done an illegal drug in my life.

Steven.

Drugs make up a huge portion of my life....I'm a Pharmacist.

I've seen cases like that all too often as well.

Hell, I'm high after *ONE* hit - even from a joint!

O say "even from a joint" because I get more of a hit if I'm using a pipe, or especially a bong.
