In your opinion, in Western society, what proportion of all men who are innately gay are in the closet or in denial?

By in-the-closet or in-denial, I mean include guys who would have any form of gay sex (including oral) if society/religion/culture were more accepting. So included closeted guys, guys who won't admit to themselves that they're gay, guys who are married and fooling around on the side--all of that.

Hmm 7 votes so far and all think choice one is right!!

It would be very interesting if we could do this by age group.
I'm pretty sure the proportion of gay guys that are closeted decreases with age - in this liberal day and age etc.

Not quite sure how you distribute this proportion. But I would venture that the older the man the more likely he is to be closeted. Of course, that comes from my own experience. I did not "come out"until I was 55

And I wonder how many of the voters are considering those who are bisexual as "closeted gays". This is something that pisses me off. I am no closeted gay, I am bisexual. It so happens that my current partner is a male, but that doesn't mean I no longer like women. Then there are those who can't accept that someone they believe is gay actually isn't.

This poll is doomed to gross inaccuracy mostly because it doesn't clarify the parameters of what gay is.

I'm pretty sure that the estimated figure of "5-10% of the world's population is gay" only refers to people who're legally and medically OUT. It's not counting people who're closeted, or people who're only out to friends and family but would prefer not to have it on their official records. I've actually known a few guys who prefer not to come out to their doctors, so that they can continue to donate blood or be an organ donor; If you're gay, they won't accept those from you due to the AIDS risk. . .even if you're clean and perfectly healthy.

Even still, 10% of 6 billion is still 360,000,000 people. That's a huge number of people who just "chose" to like cock instead, ain't it?

I think I read or heard somewhere, yes hearsay, that only about 4% of the gay population is out.

Yes, I think you're right. But let's keep it simple for now. And we're up to 15 unanimous votes. Interesting.

I'm not talking about bisexuals in this poll. Just gay men: men who choose other men over women for sex, regardless of personality or looks or whatever.

*scratches head* Are you using some system other than decimal? Because in my world, 10% of 6 billion... :D

If there was really zero societal stigma I think there would be a lot more men admitting to varying degrees of bisexuality and openly acting on it.

I guess I'm the only one who voted less than half. I guess that's just wishful thinking on my part.

Well, I'm with you. I guess we're out of touch.

It just seems to me that an awful lot of fully gay men are out nowadays. I define "out" as including those who are partially out, just to friends and family. My guess is most of the closeted guys are older or really young.

Under Cover Penis Lover.

I would restate the question as:

"What proportion of gays are confused or in denial?"

:)
Yeah, I had a really hard time phrasing the question succinctly, without a million disclaimers!

The results so far are very interesting. So are the comments. Keep 'em coming, guys!

I'd say that this question fails to account for bisexuals, but maybe we don't actually exist

First, I had to DEFINE "closeted."

I finally came up with a compromise definition, by which somebody is "closeted" if they've passively or actively hidden or suppressed their sexuality with more than half of the non-gay people (or people thought to probably be straight) with whom they have at least occasional social interactions.

This would include family, work, friends, relatives and such. In this I am NOT including those with whom the interactions are generally brief, or "all business" in nature, etc. - so I'm not including a window clerk at the Post Office, the guy who mows the lawn, a bank teller, the driver on the 47 bus, a supermarket cashier, a car mechanic, etc.

(Though I actually do happen to be "out" to the guy who oversees my yard work - and he has no qualms about having his sons come over and give my yard a "haircut" when needed.)

I voted more than half, because I think only a minority of gays are "out of the closet" to a majority of those who they socially interact with.
