What was the last play that you watched?

The one below.

I thought so. Yes, it's pretty spectacular, and the Queen of the Night's first aria is almost as spectacular.
And then after those two arias, the character pretty much disappears. Go figure ...
How was the student soprano who sang it?

And yeah, I don't think much of the story, either. I've always been a bit mystified as to why so many people like it so much.

He will be a star if he is this good starting out. (Our QotN was played by a F2M singer/actor). He nailed the song. I try to go into shows knowing little to nothing so I thought one of the leads would sing it, but yeah it was someone barely in the show. He was amazing though.

Story wise I saw Rusalka yesterday (the day after The Magic Flute) and it to was another opera I have waited years to see for a song, Song To The Moon, and it delivered 100%. The song was beautiful, but the overall story, sets, lighting, etc. was masterful. Of course one was done by students and one by pros, but I was expecting a lot more story wise for The Magic Flute. The flute was barely even part of the story.

I will admit though I am more into musicals than operas. For some reason opera always seem to be overly long to me. Did the writers get paid by the length of the show?

If the F2M singing the Queen of the Night does HRT, he's probably not going to be able to sing high Fs for much longer.

I still have never seen Rusalka. :(
I looked at the cast list, and the only singer I was familiar with was Jill Grove, who sang Jezibaba the witch. How was she? The one time I've seen her, she was terrific.

I know what you mean about operas seeming too long. Did they get paid by the length of the show? No, but most of them were written before radio and TV, and they were expected to provide a full evening's worth of entertainment. Also, once music won out in the struggle over whether the music or the words/drama was more important (and yes, for the first century or so of opera's existence there was an argument over this), composers got the excuse to stretch things out beyond what would be dramatically interesting. Sometimes the music is worth it, sometimes not.

You do know, don't you, that there's still opera being written today? Some of it is even good.

It will be a shame if he loses the ability to sing like he does, but I guess that is a choice he would have to make.

Everything about Rusalka was amazing, but the length. Yes the witch was one of the highlights. Sounds like most of the main cast has been preforming around the country and world for some time. They are well seasoned.

My friend I went with actually pointed out the next show after Rusalka that is being put on is a world premier. It was just finished being wrote not to long ago. Also reading the book for The Magic Flute one of the actors is actually in school there to write operas, not preform. Does seem odd operas can be wrote in present day, but that doesn't mean they are bad. I'd check one out if the story seemed interesting to me.

Not sure what thread to put this in so I will put it in both.

Spirted Away: Live on Stage

10/10

First time ever watching a play on film. Spirited Away: Live on Stage was a masterpiece as a play and amazing as a film. I can not say enough about it.

Just got in from seeing another opera I have waited years to see.

By far the best opera I have seen and the only opera I'd like to see again.

Stage design, light design, etc. were all amazing. I took off a point because with all operas I have seen I feel they could cut 10 to 20 minutes and it would help the show.

Here is the stage that amazed me.

So for the first time in over 20 years I went back to the high school I went to. They totally rebuilt that part of the building so everything was new to me.

Story wise I liked the play and it had some funny parts. I am really into HP so I was hoping for better.

Overall though the kids did well, but besides black cloaks standing in for robes and yellow ties or other items, everyone seemed to be in their regular clothes. It was distracting.

The new stage was way too big in my opinion. Maybe it was just because it was a minimal set play, but the stage being so wide let us see way too much of what was happening in the wings. They did not have enough side drapes.

Lastly the play seems too pro LGBT+ for no reason. There was a trans flag in one scene and they made two guys that were playing many parts play as fem as possible gay guys. It seemed preachy to me. Also the sex jokes in general was surprising. I was not thinking a high school production would make erection jokes.

I would like to see the play again though with seasoned actors and maybe a full set, if the play usually has one. As always there were a few stand out actors.

Last night I saw the musical "One More Yesterday." It was an original musical about a legendary 3 time Tony Award winning actress who is now 83, unemployed, forgotten, and yearning for another chapter in the spotlight. Not having worked in over a decade, she begs her agent to send her out for anything, and finds herself cast in a no-budget horror movie shot on an I-Phone that changes her life in countless ways she never anticipated. It was a very funny, heartwarming and entertaining musical!

I thoroughly enjoyed it immensely.

A high school production of Clue.

9/10 and my first black box production ever. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_box_theater

It worked really well as a play in black box. Also one of the actors was a standout doing some improve because his hair got caught and a prop kept getting stuck in his pocket. I will be waiting to see a large production.

We went to see a new staging of Mozart's The Magic Flute by a favorite director at the Met on Friday night. As you may have seen me post, I think The Magic Flute is overrated as a work of art, so my reaction was that this production is a smaller-scale version of the Julie Taymor-Lion King phenomenon: marvelously inventive stagecraft at the service of a story that doesn't always merit it. I do wish the costumes had been more colorful, though. The Queen of the Night (the character with the famous aria with the very-very-high notes) knocked it out of the park.

Just got in from Portland Gay Men's Chorus. They put on a Disney Pride concert.

It was not really my thing, but it was good. There was a lot of dancing and other stuff going on besides the singing.

I have Minnie ears on, but my fat head blocks them.
