  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

what's the best sitcom ever?

Black Books has been shown on BBC America, but not, to my knowledge, Is It Legal. I enjoyed Black Books.

Roseanne is just the best television show ever**-- not just best sitcom.

I also love Home Improvement.

** By ever I mean this: I Love Lucy doesn't count for me because that is an untouchable tv show. An icon.

I'm not quite sure of the defintion of sit-com but some of my fave hour-hour comedy series are:

The Office (UK!), Faulty Towers, Curb Your Enthusiasm and of course The Simpsons and Seinfeld.

please. don't forget...Family Guy!!!!!

BAH!! I really should read my posts before posting them...

Should be *definition* and *half-hour* not "hour-hour"

did anybody mention The Mary Tyler Moore Show

i loved the theme song. but even better now methinks

Never been much of a fan of American sitcoms, I'm afraid .... too formulaic and 'corny' for my taste. That said, I did enjoy watching "Happy Days", "Laverne and Shirley" and "Friends". My favourite comedy shows are all British made ..... "Dads Army", "Are You Being Served", "Absolutely Fabulous", "The Vicar of Dibley", "Keeping Up Appearances", "Allo Allo!", "To The Manor Born", "The Young Ones", "Till Death Us Do Part", "Men Behaving Badly", "The Good Life" ..... the list goes on!

As to the best comedy series ever made, without a doubt, Fawlty Towers wins hands down. Each episode was hilarious (at times achingly so), filled with sensationally good lines, wonderful characters and above all, brilliantly crafted plots. Check out this compilation of memorable moments ....

Back in high school I loved Soap. Katherine Helmond's Jessica for me was a master class in comedic acting.
Chronologically next came the Golden Girls. This time it was Bea Arthur upstaging everyone.
Later on I wet myself laughing at The Young Ones and Ab Fab.
Roseanne was the best of the shows in the 80s/90s that gave stand up comics their own show. Roseanne, Seinfeld, Grace Under Fire and Everyone Loves Raymond all had the same problem. That their title characters were being portrayed by non actors. At least they had the sense to have very strong supporting players.
While I'm grumbling...I never found 1 second of Lucille Ball funny. All that telegraphed slapstick and mugging to the camera.....Maybe it's an American thing.

The Honeymooners might be right up there with "I Love Lucy" though.

The Honeymooners is considered by many to be better and more influential than I Love Lucy, which would have been nothing without Lucy. The Flinstones was definitely heavily influenced by The Honeymooners, and I can't think of an example like that for Lucy, although that could be because she is inimitable.

Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman is now on DVD - but just season one.

Other favorites I have include

Car 54 (possibly my #1 favorite)
McHale's Navy (several cute sailors in that one shirtless and in tight pants, plus Tim Conway is hilarious in this)
The Phil Silvers' Show

The Beverly Hillbillies was good but seems more dated now than my other selections. Most sitcoms today (or since the mid 1960s) seem much less timeless than some of the best classics from the 50s and 60s. Of the newer ones, I guess I like The Nanny the best. I liked Seinfeld when it first started, but it got old really fast for me.

ETA: Malcolm in the Middle is on reruns here, and I watch that every day. Really good writing on that one.
