I just got a great buy on a huge bunch of fabulous looking asparagus at the store. Usually, I put it on a plate with some butter, Saran Wrap it tight and microwave it...

That way is good, but fattening .

It won't fit in my steamer without cutting it in half, (the asparagus, not the steamer ;)) ....So, there must be a better way.

Ideas ? Thoughts ? Suggestions ?

I do it the same as you. It's my favorite way.

You can grill it.

My mom cooks them in the pan with either butter or oil... I'm not sure. =/

Pour on some olive oil, toss it with some salt, then roast it in a hot oven. Sprinkle with some parmesan cheese.

HOLLANDAISE, I forgot to tell you to get yourself a good HOLLANDAISE mix, or even make it yourself (good luck).

Asparagus is only as delicious as its Hollandaise. (ww)

You do know to bend the stalks until they break at their naturally weakest point before you cook them, right? This way, the woody portion of the stalk can be removed, leaving just the tender, eatable upper portion without any effort. This would most likely make it easier to fit into the steamer basket. ..|

I like to grill it after brushing it with olive oil and a bit of sea salt and hot peppers.

Dude...

I've tried SOME of the above mentioned ideas -- and WANT to try the olive oil roasting method (that sounds AWESOME)...

For ME...

I steam them in a large frying pan (just a little water in the bottom) -- and when they're ALMOST done (doesn't take long) -- I throw a couple of pats of butter into the water -- plate them (has the butter infused taste W/O all the fat) and lightly salt them...

I LOVE ASPARAGUS!!!

And whatever its supposed to do to CUM -- well -- thats my BF's problem...

:lol::lol::lol:

Stir Fry it with garlic and oil until it smells nutty and is tender.

Its delicious! :)

This is how I do it
  • 1 bunch of medium sized asparagus, about 1 lb
  • 2 Tbsp of the most exquisite extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest - freshly grated lemon rind
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 Prepare the asparagus by rinsing them thoroughly, break off any tough, white bottoms and discard. Cut into 1 to 2 inch sections, slicing the asparagus at a slight diagonal.
2 Fill a medium sized saucepan half way with water, bring to a boil. Add the asparagus and reduce heat slightly to a simmer. Parboil the asparagus for exactly 2 minutes. Drain the hot water. While the asparagus are still hot, toss them in a bowl with the olive oil, Parmesan, and lemon rind. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm or room temperature.

I like Riverrick's suggestion. Great for my diet. I will try it as soon as I can get my hands on some aspag.

You are TOO much! :lol:

What about when the BF partakes in this food-love of yours? :badgrin:

i say steam it in the micro the way you do it now, put a drizzle of olive oil, salt and pepper and thats it. cheese will hide the taste of the asparagus.
i love it but i dont like the way it makes my pee smell.

We've cooked it just about any way, including grilling, steaming, frying, etc; but we find that steaming and adding butter and seasoning is 'bout the best for us and more healthy too...

However, if the 'gus is NOT real young, we DO trim the tiny "thorns" and break off the woody end part so that we can just eat it while it's still hot/warm...

Yum, yum!(*8*)(*8*):kiss::kiss:
