  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What's with the porn avatars?

What silly man said earlier---:

"But he's right, bradlee -- it isn't about porn, it's about respecting others, and letting the non-porn forums BE non-porn forums, and let the porn be where the forums menu says it is. Oh, in a way it's about porn -- about it not being imposed on everyone, everywhere, even when there are lots of guys who don't come here for porn -- and those who do, know where to go. And I suppose in a way it's about having a life that doesn't revolve around porn."

so that would also mean all of the topics need to go then too, right?? you know the ones I'm talking about don't cha?

ever had sex with a bagle
have you ever tasted your own cum
how big is your cock
I got fucked last night

god thats all um.......SEX related isn't it? and wouldn't that fall under the porn catagory? I think it does.. which brings me back to my original statement....

so I guess they would have to eliminate all of those threads then too--- they are all porn/sex related.... God where would all the fun be?------

nope you have a really silly thread going on here, thanks for the entertainment!

i'm not telling anyone any such thing

that is foolish

i am saying that we dont need to feel ashamed of male nudity at a gay porn site

dont make this personal

You argued that porn avatars should be allowed.
That was beyond your first post, which essentially agreed with my position.

Then you seemed to be defending Soilwork's porn-in-your-face position.

After that you made one of your posts which are so often insinuating, personal attacks without naming names.

Someone, apparently, is -- according to you -- trying to "control" things. It's either me, or those who like having porn even in the non-porn parts of the site. They're insisting porn should be everywhere; I'm insisting people should be able to go to areas that aren't in the "adult content" area and find them free of adult content.

My position isn't about control. The other one is.
If you aren't upholding that one, sorry -- but your trend seemed to be going that way.

Not to be mean here, but you know this is a porn site... why do you remain here if it causes you this much distress? You say you're looking for some "community," but damn this one here for not being up to your expectations. You have your own issues like everyone else, but I know that when I needed the sounding board this community was there for me. I'm only sorry that you were not able to find it yourself.

And don't kid yourself, neither one of them (Andreus, Soilwork, et al) is telling you or me what I may or may not enjoy. You have done that on your own. How? By condemning the boards for not living up to some ideal that you have fabricated.

As I've already mentioned twice before, if you feel there is something lacking then it is up to you to create what you need. It is very obvious that you will not find it here.

At this point there is nothing more that I can gleam from this discussion and it is my belief that you are only perpetuating this ongoing argument for your own amusement.

So you didn't read the original post?

There's a double standard, and those with porn avatars are upholding it.
There are sections of the board that are NOT under the "adult content" heading. But you and others are arguing that people who go to those areas should be subject to any adult content they feel like putting in their avatars, or sigs.
That's hypocritical. It's also rude and disrespectful. If there are places set aside for not being adult content, why should anyone want to drag it in there? Would you welcome pictures of Fred Phelps and his signs in the porn sections?

I'm perpetuating this because I can't believe that adults can ignore the double standard they are supporting, especially adults in a community that's always calling for dignity and respect. Why can't respect be shown to those who go to non-porn forums by simply not putting porn in there? Do you think that people who aren't here for the porn lack that dignity?

If you think that sex = porn, you have a serious problem. Especially if you think that people's questions about things that happen among (with, or by) gays are porn, you have a truly serious problem.

By your definition, sex education would be porn....

No. I just think you lack common sense.

You're the only one here who cannot see that what you want is not necessarily right. Nor is it fair to impose your 'morality' on the majority. You demand dignity and respect and fail to show that to others when you condemn anyone who does not agree with you.

And I find it ironic that you would condemn me for not reading your original post (which I did thank you very much) and then fail to address what I've been telling you since I joined this debacle. For the fourth time, it is up to you to find what you seek. Don't expect us or the boards to just give it to you. You have to want it for yourself.

OMG--- so now your saying that porn isn't sex.......what was I thinking all these years when watching porn, and I thought THEY WERE having sex...

holy crap--- thanks for clearing that up...I will sleep so much better tonight because of it

and nope sorry, no problems here-- amusement at YOUR expense perhaps, but definately no problems here... thanks for the concern though..it just shows you care...even though you got that issue thing with the tiny pictures...

have a good one! time to find another silly thread!

If you're going to equate "adult" with "likes seeing porn everywhere", then you're trying to own everyone else. There are forums for porn, but there are lots of people who don't come here for the porn. If JUB is indeed "entertainment for gay men", then there ought to be entertainment other than porn. If all it's about is porn, then the "JUB community" is just hypocrisy posing as marketing.

As others have related before, not everyone is even aware that JUB has porn until long after they've been here a while. I didn't realize it for quite some time -- the link I had was to the forums page, and I ignored the porn ads as I do on a number of other sites, where ads support the site and are just part of the background.

I'd ask, if all you're after is a porn site, why come to JUB?
I came here for the porn, you idiot! It is a porn site!! I just use the forums.I like looking at naked men having sex together. Perhaps you should start an adult gay site that is porn free.....

I didn't come here for the porn because the porn on here is not my cup of tea. I came here for the forum, but the avatars and siggies displaying nudity does not offend me, yeah it might be tragic to have a naked guy on my screen when my parents pass by but still.

I'm pretty sure people are registering the message board knowing that porn, pornographic pictures of guys will be displayed through the forum in posts, threads, signature images and in emails.

If you dislike all the pictures of naked men on here then turn off sig and avatar images. Ranting about it is not going to solve anything.

You're defending a double standard, and false labeling, and you say what I want "is not necessarily right"?

The ones here trying to impose morality are those who want porn even in the non-porn areas. Or are you telling me that JD and Seth are hypocrites... and you approve of that?

You twisted that and you know it.

I'm getting really tired of replying to posts that display either evidence of not reading or of deliberately trying to provoke by twisting things. So please, talk directly and to what has been said.

Oh please. Don't even try to put words in my mouth. It is very obvious that you are now grasping at straws in a desperate attempt to stay on page one. Feel free to flame away, I'm through with you and your tirade.

I'd rather hold this adult site to being what it says it is -- though with so many of you arguing for a double standard, that may be hard.

Go read the forums table of contents page -- there's an "adult content" area, and the rest isn't.
You and others are arguing that "not adult content" should mean "except when we want to add some". That's disrespectful.

JUB is a site that has porn. It makes its major money off porn. Fine.
But as Andreus said, it's more than a porn site. It gets some of its best advertising through the parts not dedicated to porn. Its uniqueness is due ONLY to the parts not dedicated to porn.
So why try to reduce it to porn, and nothing else? Why try to make the words JUB describes itself with into a lie?

You defended the ban on porn in many forums... except when people decide to post it anyway, in their avatars.
That's a double standard.

It was pointed out as a double standard clear back in the first post. A moderator agreed it's a double standard. You defend it anyway.

I'm not putting words in your mouth -- you did that.

Hey hey! this is a pretty intense conversation going on here over something pretty innocuous.

I think - at least purely theoretically speaking - Kulindahr poses an interesting question.

The reality is though that it would be much too difficult to moderate the avatars and signatures. There would be too many guys who have sort of 'pornish' (if that's a word) avatars that just couldn't be easily classified. Take Bashful's avatar - it's really quite tame but it also shows nudity! ;)

I think (my own 2 cents only here) that because of the many sort of shades of grey, this sort of thing could not be effectively moderated without appearing some what arbitrary and capricious at times. I'd be quite surprised to see xxx avatars & siggies leave JUB.

Also: This is certainly a fair question for discussion and interesting thread but please keep the conversation on-topic and civil, and detached. Thank you!!

I don't think that, though it may be innocuous, that makes it trivial.
I think JUB is a great resource for guys just coming out, and so do the guys at the two centers I mentioned in Portland -- but they can't recommend it because there's no way to avoid porn. That's not trivial, nor is the effective double standard of "you can't post pron in this forum, except in your avatar and sig"

How is the no-porn ban in posts enforced?

Well it would be much much easier to have a version of the board where you log in and you simply see no graphics than to try to add this to the list of things that mods moderate. As it stands right now there are multiple right answers to the way mods do things which can cause some confusion.

I think at one point JD & Seth were working on a plain jane version of the board that would have no images but I don't know what ever happened to that idea.

(Uploaded "plain jane" screen cap available for a limited time only. ;))

It would be simple:

Does this image show someone doing some ordinary activity that would be done fully clothed also (and in polite society; groping one's genitals when clothed is hardly 'polite')?

Biking, jogging, swimming, sitting on the stairs, picking flowers, dancing, dashing to an elevator, cooking, hiking, playing tennis, jumping rope, wrestling, surfing, building sand castles, singing by a campfire, watching TV, playing cards, having a picnic -- all things people would do clothed, just ordinary activities, but in the nude.
