Now for trivia: Way back when when area codes were first introduced in North America, they all had a middle digit of 0, 1 or 2 and never had a first digit of 1. Then they were assigned based on population with the larger areas with smaller numbers (213, 312 and so on). This was done because it took longer to dial the numbers, (DIAL telephones) and the powers thought those in nowhereville didn't need to call long distance all that often. So when you see a 'long pull' number like 906 you know it's out in the hinterlands and 'short pull' numbers are the originals in places like New York (212), LA (213), Chicago (312).
