  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What's your BMI?

I forget what my BMI is but my BF percentage is 14.7%

For an Athlete 6 to 13 % is good for Body fat and !3 to 17 is considered Fitness... all are normal..

If I find my last caliper BMI measurement I will post it... I seem to recall 21 but am unsure....

It's always amusing to see how often people dismiss the BMI scale even though it is accurate for nearly 97% of the populace at large.

I have a BMI of 23. And yes I work out every day usually. Sorry, but BMI doesn't lie.

It does when a person is 5'4" and looks like this:

25.3. If I lose 3 more pounds I'll be within range

Somewhere around 24 to 25.5 (can't bother with exact measurements), so either overweight or getting there. And yet my arms are like twigs. No muscle mass, either. Something ain't right...

Regardless of BMI, I really should start working out. My body is weird...

Of course it does, but you don't look like that. You are not the exception. Neither is 97% of the populace, as they aren't professional athletes.

I didn't say I was the exception. My BMI is just fine.

Hence, why I originally said 97% before your pedantic, reflexive, post.

My response wasn't reflexive. I was just saying that it isn't an infallible system and pointing that out doesn't make someone dismissive or jaded.

Anyway, back to the topic.

It really does have its flaws though. After measuring my BMI and bodyfat (BMI 24.3, bf 14%), a personal trainer at the gym told me I shouldn't increase muscle mass because my BMI was almost too high.

I was too WTF to say anything.

I'm having the same problems. I weigh 150 pounds but look more like 130. It's not good. You probably should talk to a doctor if you haven't yet and work out if you're able to. Protein shakes(amino acids) are also supposed to help build lean muscle mass. I've been getting some more exercise lately and am taking a supplement. I'm not sure how well the protein powder is helping but at the very least, it's some extra protein in my diet. It seems to make me feel a little better.

Yikes, I didn't think it would be a health problem. In any case, I think I'm getting enough protein in my diet (enough everything, actually; my appetite exploded in the past month or so, though my weight barely changed, and actually dropped a bit for a while). I've been trying some basic workouts, but I guess I'm just lazy in that regard. I'll try to up the intensity where possible. Thanks for the advice!

(By the way, though my arms are rail thin, I'm rather flabby everywhere else. It's just the arms, hence the weirdness)

My BMI calculated 30.87, which makes me Class 1 Obese; but on the same site, my body fat percentage came out 17.42%, which qualifies as "fit." I'm 6'3", 145 lbs, and 43 years old, btw.

Online calculators such as these are kind of bullshit, but give you something to think about. :)

Swellegant, I think you typed something wrong or the web site you used was programmed wrong. 6'3" and 145 lbs would give you a BMI of 18.1 "underweight".

Nope! Operator error. Now who's full of bullshit?

You must have entered 245 lbs. Or 5'3".

BMI is a measurement for 97% of the populace, unless you are a full-time athlete or have no clue as to your body fat %. Additionally, it is impossible to do a true body fat test from a do-it-yourself tape measure test at home. You need a trained professional doing a caliper test or a water submersion test for a body fat %.

With your stats you can obviously look in a mirror and know if your fat. Which is no. However, for those who consistently deny the relevancy of the BMI, you have to wonder if they're the 1/3 to 2/3 of Americans who are obese or morbidly obese and refuse to believe the scale. Hence, part of the reason obesity is out of control in the USA.

Sorry, typo. I am 6'3", and weighed 145 when I was sixteen, but now I weigh 245 pounds. I'm a bit fat, about 30 pounds overweight, but I really don't think I'd call that "obese."
