  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

What's your BMI?

I've grown a little since the last time I checked, but it was round about 18 IIRC, maybe just cruising on underweight.

I don't really go by BMI though. Body fat % is more reliable, imho. Or electrical impedance, but I dunno if the latter is particularly common.

According to the BMI, I'm 'overweight'.

Now look at the picture immediately to your left...do I look overweight? well DO I?

No seriously, the BMI is bullshit, right up there with 'don't swim after you eat'

The system breaks down completely when dealing with athletes, or anyone who's ever seen the inside of a gym. Us homosexuals are supposed to be sharp and ahead of the curve, why are some of you still giving an ounce of credence to the BMI?

Evolve, people.

BMI is a measurement for 97% of the populace, unless you are a full-time athlete or have no clue as to your body fat %. Additionally, it is impossible to do a true body fat test from a do-it-yourself tape measure test at home. You need a trained professional doing a caliper test or a water submersion test for a body fat %.

My bodyfat percentage was from a machine that, I guess, works with tiny electrical impulses and resistance. I'm not sure, but it had a fancy name and was used in my gym, so I'll trust it. ;)

BMI is a basic measurement, and a lot of people would indeed do well knowing what theirs is. But there are so many ifs and buts to it that it's a mostly useless number to anyone who is versed in the basics of healthy living. The fact the personal trainer told me I shouldn't gain muscle because it would push my BMI up is ridiculous of course, yet that's what he truly believed. (shows what he knows)

The most important measurement of fat-or-fit isn't a number, but this: do you feel comfortable in your body? Can you perform daily tasks without getting long-winded? Do you suffer from lower-back pain or joint pain? Do you honestly think your body is healthy? The answers to those questions are vital, imho.

Dude, you're wrong. Why do you think such a huge percentage of Americans who are overweight, obese, and morbidly obese, refuse to face the facts? D E N I A L !

Electrical impedance devices are calibrated for couch potatoes, not athletes, just as BMI is. For instance, my bathroom scale (which has an impedance measurement built in) says my BF is 20% (overweight), while caliper measurements or tape measure measurements using the Navy formula indicate 12%. Without saying which is right and which is wrong, there's a discrepancy of a factor of nearly 2...

I don't need no stinking BMI to tell me what I already know ... I'M FAT ...fat, I tell you, FAT!!!

I'm only 5'7" and weigh 12 stone; until a couple of years ago I had hardly ever weighed more than 10 stone. :help:

I blame my disgustingly gross increase in porky lardness on giving up smoking several years ago and my slowing metabolism now that I am old. ](*,)

...of course being a lazy, salad-dodging, couch-potato, bing-drinking, pie-muncher might have something to do with my rapidly increasing bulk. #-o

I thought you meant Bowel Movement Index and was going to say twice a day.

For the rest of it. When I was 29, I had a 29 inch waist, when I was 30, it was 30 inches.

I hope I don't live until I'm 97.

Update:

BMI: 22.3

I love you anyways! :luv:

I am sadden to say I have gained four pounds since summer. I have been eating cake, it was my birthday, and drinking juices. Hence, my sugar intake has increased.

Anyways, my updated BMI is now 22.9.

Oh and if we're making excuses.... I have been lazy and not going to the gym very much for the past 4 months. But that's not my fault because Lifetime wanted to charge me way too god damn much and then the new place was too far away. I just joined another that's right by my work though so hopefully I can get back into the groove of things. I hurt all over so I think that's a good sign.

BMI 21.48
Height 5' 11"
Weight 154 pounds

Blood Pressure has always been 120/80 - I never seem to vary on that! :)

Being 5ft 10, 54kg.

I used the NHS one, considering it's not an American one (their measurements can be a tad funny).
