When Did America Stop Being Great ?

No, but we can see the effect of the flood of brain cells that leave you through your posts, though.

You cannot see the effect that the flood of millions and million and millioms of immigrants, willing to work cheap, have had on wages and the standard of living?

So wages are controlled by a group of people at the bottom of the socio-economic totem pole? Where did you go to school? Did they have, like, books?

Pretty much. Why do you think most everything you pick up at the store is made in China?

Do you really have to have this explained? I'm disappointed.

Economics 101. If there is a surplus of labor or anything else, the price (wage) goes down. If there is a shortsge of labor, the wages go up as employers compete for what they need.

You are the principle drum beater on this site for restricting immigration into the United States, whereas American industry welcomes immigrants, for as you have just correctly reminded us labour surplus ensures the cost of labour is reduced, and industry benefits.

You can't have it both ways....

Just relax and take a walk through a cemetery -- that's what the Great Levellerer makes of passports, nationalities, religions, ethnicities...

There's a common and hilarious theme here-- the black people are like "what are you talking about 'great?'" the woman in this thread is like "what are you talking about 'great?'" and the white guys are all like "Yall are nuts this country used to be the tops!" :rotflmao:

Oh, let's be clear, I was also including disability to go with that 'woman's', trans, various-other-sundries viewpoint. And then there's adding them together, where you get screwed in new and entertaining ways the farther back in history you go. While I care about our economy I'm more interested in making it a bit more equitable than 'great'. Their conceptualization of 'Great!' always makes me a bit......suspicious.

I mean, lookit all the pictures in the workplace from when it was considered 'Great'. I think people forget the word 'systematic' is floating around next to words like racism and sexism. That's not even getting into what truly unrighteous shit that work entailed.

So THAT'S why Walmart pays their employees nothing, because immigrants are here demanding low wages. And here I was thinking corporate greed and business-oriented politics were at fault. These large companies WANT to pay us more, they are so eager and hungry to lift their wages but those damned immigrants just won't let them. Ok, I get it now, thanks. :)

Not to mention did this period of greatness begin before or after English settlers raped, massacred and displaced the people who were here before them?

I had wondered why economists had laid out a plan that showed Walmart (and the like) COULD raise wages without hurting their bottom line, yet hadn't. See I thought control came from the top, now I know it's the nobodies at the bottom who are running the show. Thanks for clearing that up!

Oh, the greatness definitely came before, that's how people were wise enough to continue exploiting the everloving hide out of all and sundry that crossed their paths.

On a point of pedantry the indigenous populations of North, and South America had a well established track record for doing just this in what is now termed tribal warfare, before the arrival of the British, French, Dutch, German, Spanish, and Portuguese colonists. I haven't overlooked the Vikings who arrived in North America some centuries earlier. I gather from my cousin living in Crete (Dimitrios) that the Minoan civilisation also discovered America much, much earlier than the Italian fellow, Christopher Columbus.
:D

Like other immigrants, they came here to make a better life for themselves without much regard for the people here

Like other immigrants, they came here to make a better life for themselves without much regard for the people here. They occupied unsettled land and defended themselves from wild animals and humans. Being British, they established a highly developed country from the beginning; a democracy with a wrtten constitution, the rule of law and established rights. They were the second counrty to achieve the industrial revolution, and developed the greatest economy in the entire history of the world, which will probably never be duplicated in its accomplishments.

American industry is closing down.

As is Britain's. Migrants are only welcomed in households for unskilled manual labour.

High tech industry remains at the core of American enterprise.

Chinese airlines fly Boeings made in the United States, and Airbuses made in the European Union.

The United States, and the UK continue to attract high quality graduates from around the globe...as well as unskilled labour.

China has overtaken the United States as the dominant country on the planet.

China has colonised Australia and now doing Africa. It is creating new sovereign land for their missile launching base in the strategic trading routes in the South China Sea.

It will swallow the US interests in Philippines.
