When Did America Stop Being Great ?

The moment early-century yay happy-go-lucky colonists decided that it was their right to land, even if it meant to kill. It was made even more sickening (to me) when they gave it the name, "manifest destiny"; not only so but actually living by it as a visionary guidance.

Must I remind: this was before America was even America; let alone before it was ever considered "great".

Worse, it is still happening. They are still coming.

Ben is fond of this "tie the plight of poor white Americans having to endure immigration as the same struggle Native Americans had to endure", he just leaves out the part where Natives were systematically eradicated. Directly.

So we feel healthier but die a year or two earlier. Many would say its a good trade. Who wants to feel bad and live a long long time? Does the show up on your yardstick?

So as usual, you pull some relatively random and unscientific stats to pretty up your contention that all Americans enjoy the best healthcare in the world when the actual outcomes and case costs tell a different story.

As do the infant health and mortality rates.

Again, I have to say that you possess the most amazingly persistent tunnel vision founded on a point blank refusal to accept any factual information that challenges your incredibly narrow and delusional perspective on the world.

But you keep clinging to that chunk of flotsam because if you ever let go...I have a feeling you'd drown.

Up until the Moral Majority, the God botherers were trained to stay away from politics. In fact they were cautioned against getting too involved.

It was only when someone figured out that the GOP had a built in base of fundamentalist conservatives to titty fuck at the polls that the deal was sealed.

The second law of thermodynamics states that the total entropy of an isolated system always increases over time, or remains constant in ideal cases where the system is in a steady state or undergoing a reversible process. The increase in entropy accounts for the irreversibility of natural processes, and the asymmetry between future and past.

Just sayin'

The US has always been more religious than now. Whenever you think it was great, it was more religious than now.

Now that other subgroups besides rich wasps are finally getting their piece of the pie is what you'd call the least great period of the country? The USA has never been RELIGIOUS, it was founded by deists who believed in entitlement not God. It's almost sinister, no, it is sinister the way you're referring to periods where women were subjugated and blacks were raped, castrated, lynched and enslaved as "the great period of America." You're either a closet racist/sexist or you're just incredibly ignorant. You've completely glossed over the disenfranchisement of minorities as if it either didn't happen or wouldn't have bothered you that much.

Wher did I say that?

We all know what happens when religion rules. The USA has been fighting it for ages. Yet here in North America (specifically Canada and the US), conservative governments try to govern by religion. The only difference is that the conservatives here in Canada don't get away with it. They've tried. And if they get into power and try to pass laws based on religion, they find out very quickly that it's probably not the best idea. Harper found that out when he tried to bring back the same-sex marriage debate shortly after he came into power the first time. Canada demands a separation between the church and the state.

You cannot fight one religion and rule by another.

It is still great by any reasonable standard, but not for much longer. The downward turn began with the counterculture of the 60s, when liberals began to take pride thinking America is bad.

The sixties, known to conservatives everywhere as when those uppity fuckers finally refused to shut up.

I mean, you did ask for an example from Karen, no?

Every post in this thread. :? I'll give you a chance to clarify. What was this exact era of greatness you're referring to? Give a guestimate, a time-frame, like year xxxx-xxxx, you clearly aren't talking about modern times where homos and women and ethnic minorities are slowly climbing out of the pits, you're referring to yesteryear. So.... explain.

This person thinks America is great. They travelled halfway around the world.

They begged, borrowed and stole to join in Americas's greatness!

For one period, between 1861 and 1856, 450,000 Americans died to free the slaves. And no, slavery was never the fault of the US--the south, yes, the US, no.There was never a time when the Federal government could have ended slavery without a civil was.

One of my favorite fairy tales.

It's a gem, innit. Whole cloth, too! But oh, the North loathes introspection. The North=Good Guys concept is about as honest-feeling as 'Bless your heart". Awfully bitter siblings for having so much in common.

It's not his fault, that's how the public school system taught it. North were the good guys who didn't want slavery. I guess they were FORCED to keep slaves by the villanous south.

Yes, but they overlay the 'Good North' so lazily that even next to the most watered down and truncated of facts I find it difficult to believe slavery and lack of rights in the North, among everything else, has actually been missed. As opposed to the Good North overlay being actively and continually bolstered through bald-faced lie; now that I'd believe.
