Here the limit is 55 mph. It seems acceptable to drive 70 mph. I usually drive between 65 to 70 and have never had a speeding ticket.

85 mph would be a license to drive 100 mph.

I think it would be a bit to fast for me.
 
Senseless to me. Driving 80 and 90 mph never was fun for me. High speed rail is much better and safer.

I don't think, even in the middle of nowhere in Australia, that I've seen a speed limit in excess of 110kph, which is like 70mph :lol:

On those roads, me and my friends got to about 150kph, and honestly it was scary as fuck :eek:
For that to be the speed limit is honestly insane.
 
Fast is when your partner is about to fuck you and by just touching your ass, he cums. That is fast for me.
 
Haven't been to Texas yet and don't know how highways look over there.
But over here in Austria we've got a limit of 130 km/h (~80 mph), and it works without major problems (and you can go 145 acc. to the speedometer without getting problems;)). Across the border in Germany, there isn't a limit, and it still works. Even on old two-lane-Autobahns without emergency lane (which look like this) the trucks are going 80 km/h (~50 mph) on the right lane, and car traffic is (more or less) flowing with up to 150-180 km/h (~90-120 mph) on the left lane. Of course, you don't want to have an emergency there... ;)
Besides that, there are the three-lane-Autobahns (like this one), where you can go 200 km/h (~130 mph) and more if your car is able to and traffic is not too dense(like on the picture). Of course, you may be overtaken by the ICE, which is travelling on the railroad track next to the Autobahn ;)
When travelling at night in Germany, achieving an average speed of 140 km/h (~85 mph) over long distances is not a big problem.
 
I don't know the statistics, but I'm guessing that you're 5 or 10 or more times as likely to lose control at 90 (compared to 65) if you have a tire blowout, or swerve [:wave:] to avoid an animal, ot hit a piece of debris, or hit a pothole, etc.

I do NOT really like driving faster than about 75 to 78.

If Texas roads were engineered like German roads then I would approve.

But, to me, they could have settled for 70 or 75 maybe.

I also have to add, for Western States, the speed limit ought to be high, there are so many wide open spaces, long stretches of endless road, why not?

85 is too fast in my opinion - I know when I drive 80 mph I feel like there is less control of the car, and I only do 80 when driving between Houston and Dallas.
 
Given that cars are more safe and capable today than they were even 10 years ago it should be ok.
Here in New England where even the highways can get narrow and twisty folks still cruise at 70 - 80 mph. They even attempt it in snow storms!
 
I think 85mph is okay. There are some 70mph highways in California. I usually drive 85mph on them.
 
Ever drive the West Virginia turnpike? I swear you have to drive 100mph just to stay out of everyone's way.
 
In the UK the speed limit on motorways is 70mph and the police don't generally bother you below 80. I usually set cruise control at about 80 and then forget about it, otherwise the car tends to creep up to 90 without me realising.

I don't think 85 should be a problem.
 
Ye Olde K Car doesn't go that fast. Anything above 65 makes one rather seasick. So if the actual speed limit went to 85 around me, I'd get a ticket for obstructing the flow of traffic.
