Actually, it's going to happen again with another virus- either a virulent influenza strain or another coronavirus.

In the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans had the luxury of being able to chose their behavior. The mortality was low enough that a segment of the US was able to live in denial.

What most of the didn't realize is that they had dodged 2 previous coronavirus epidemics - SARS and MERS.

SARS had a 15% mortality rate (but over 50% mortality in patients over 60). When it hit Canada in 2002-2003, about 11% of the people who got it died.

MERS has a 35% mortality rate.

SARS-CoV-2 (the coronavirus that causes COVID-19) has a mortality of about 1.8% in the US. Over 565,000 people in the US died- which is a lot - but there were over 31 million who got it. By contrast, Mexico is reporting about a 9% mortality- 211,000 deaths out of 2.3 million people who got it.


This time around, the US was lucky, given the history of coronaviruses. If we would have had the 11% mortality that SARS had in Canada, it would have been 3.4 million people who died.
 
Nope. gonna wait it out. Eventually will probably have no choice other than to get it for travel and work but don't have plans to anytime soon.
 
Got my 1st shot the day b4 yesterday - Astra-Zeneca - sore arm - fatigue - a touch of fever, a quite normal response.

You'll be happy to know that the shot itself is strangely painless. Some vaccines sting a little. This one doesn't. It's a small amount of fluid, so there's not much feeling to it at all. The soreness usually appears a few hours later but it lasts less than 3 days for most people.
 
Well, I got my first shot of the Moderna vaccine today. But I almost didn't.

I took the bus to the hospital vaccination site.

IT WAS DRIVE-THRU.

I do not drive.
I HATE drive-thru.

It was a cool sunny day. I waited, knowing I did NOT want to get into or behind a line of cars.

I found a nice outdoor bench, with a clear view of the site, got my book out, and read. After an HOUR AND A HALF, the line of freakin' cars disappeared. I was able to walk up, check in, and get my shot. The shot was painless. The hoopla, not.

I HATE DRIVE-THRU.

I'm wondering what I'll do in four weeks when it's time for my second shot. Right now I think I'll arrive ninety minutes late. Or better for me, arrange a vaccination at a walk-up location.

The vaccine rollout has been slower in my home county than in others. It may be easier to get my second shot with more convenience for me.

Oh, and I'm in trouble at work. I was supposed to work tonight. After all the nonsense of the day, I did not feel like going to work even though I have no physical complications from the shot or otherwise. My boss wasn't pleased.
 
I am glad that you were able to get your first shot. I'm sorry about the trouble, but maybe as you said, you will be able to schedule the second at another location.

Congrats on getting your first shot, even if it took some work to get it.

You aren't required to get both shots from the same provider, even though they usually prefer that you make your second appointment when you get your first shot.

If you got Moderna, you need an appointment in 28 days. If you got Pfizer, you need an appointment in 21 days.

Hang on to your vaccination card. You'll need to bring that with you when you get your second dose.

Get online and make your appointment now. There will be plenty of vaccine but you will need to get the second dose from the same manufacturer and not all sites have both vaccines. It looks like Rite-Aid and several pharmacies, in addition to the public health clinics are administering vaccines in your area.
 
Got my 2nd pfizer shot today. I am now invincible!

OK, I got my second Pfizer shot this morning. So far I haven't had any symptoms, but it's probably still too early to tell. I noticed that there were far fewer people at the vaccination tent than when I went three weeks ago. I guess that sort of confirms that there is a drop-off of people coming in, far fewer than we need for herd immunity. C'mon, it's free government health care!

Perhaps the CDC should look into hiring blow-dart hunters. But instead of poison darts, they would hit people like the anti-vaxxers and MAGA hat types with the vaccine.
