I never said they were against the tax cuts, I said they were mad about and opposed to the Obama deal for exactly the reasons you state, the increased spending which is what the Tea Party movement was largely about. Do keep up. The comments here was that the Tea Party spokesmen were not saying anything negative about this deal and that is just not correct.

We aren't raising the direct taxes in the middle of a recovery, substantial assistance to the unemployed, poor and middle class is being worked in, the the amount of money being filtered back into the economy through the unemployment extension, the child tax credit, payroll holiday and other 'not for the rich' benefits in this package, some folks are calling it a stealth stimulus package. Wasn't that what the Left was calling for?

OTOH, pork, in this situation, is stimulus -- some of it probably about as short-term as improving the insulation on federal buildings (yes, there's a long-term benefit to that, but I don't think it fits into the significant figures on my HP calculator).

Calling this "the best that can be done" is not a description of the bill, it's a description of the intellectual cesspool Congress has become, a morass of ideology with very little concern for real people -- and no courage for serious action. When the most prominent Republican in the city can't even grasp simple truths Dr. Laura gets (repeal DADT) and tells active military people to their face that he knows better than they do, and the foremost Democrat facing off against him is a limp strand of spaghetti with about as much creative spark as a wine cork (maybe less; creativity has flowed from the grape), maybe we shouldn't expect anything better than patch-together grab-baskets of legislation.

Or maybe we need to do something about the system.

All very good points and I mostly agree with them. When I say best that can be done I mean that in the spirit of compromise between the interests of the minority and majority that is supposed to be how congress works. It just a real shame that it takes major turn-over election and procrastination on the part of the current congress to bring it about. The last minute rush to do all this pretty much precludes doing much better.

I don't think it's been procrastination so much as obstruction. I think the Republicans, who've been tossing wrenches into the works at every opportunity, are counting on the Democrats to be gentlemanly enough to not do the same.

It's just too bad the Senate hasn't had any leadership for these two years.

But Republicans are not alone in this to blame, the Democrats were putting it and many other issues off for the election. The main thing it shows is not only do we not have any real leadership on EITHER side of the aisle but that we are losing the art of compromise in the partisan nightmare that currently dominates our current politics and without it the Congress cannot function.

Let's not forget, Japanese bonds are at historic lows and their debt to GDP is at 2 to 1. We're not near those levels.

Yep. Even with unemployment where it's at. I want Social Programs, believe me. But I have to accept that we can't have everything we want, when we necessarily want it. This is the absolute best thing to do to get spending under control and will actually come close to balancing the budget.

Nobody likes to pay taxes, and yes we are recovering from a recession. At the same time, we have managed to do with having less in the past and we will do it again. We will manage and we will survive it.
