  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

While shopping yesterday, I crossed paths with a couple and she was wearing a black burka

Why would religion be the marker of the 19th century any more than the 20th or 21st?

85% of the human population believes in a god or gods today. There has been much clamor that religion is a thing of the past, not supported by the evidence. In fact, the areas on the planet with the highest birth rates are also the most religious. That means religion is increasing, or will as those areas outstrip the less reproductive peoples.

Thank you. Do they mix socially too, and are those in government of the conservative strain, like the burka-wearing individuals?

I think the Muslim Lord Mayors of Birmingham have come from the Labour Party, so they're socialists. Many Muslims are socially conservative though. Increasingly I think they do mix socially, particularly as they move into more middle class, professional jobs and cease living in inner city "ghettos".

We have a few ladies(?) who cover their faces in Amsterdam, but not many.

My aunt -who lives in an apartment building with a view on Amsterdam- has a neighbor who is from Yugoslavia and both she and her daughter walk around covered.

Her husband couldn't stand it and left them. So much for the theory that such women are always compelled to cover up by their husbands.

I read a piece about a decade ago by an Englishwoman who converted to Islam and started wearing a burka and loved it. She loved being able to walk around anonymously and not be concerned about how she looked or what others would think of how she looked. She found it very freeing.

I've heard that male or female when you get old no one looks at you anyway.

Don't you believe it!

That's generally true of people deemed ugly whether it is genes, injury/deformity, neglect, or age. One of the reasons many young people find it surprising that they know an older gay man is that they don't think of the seniors being sexual in any manner. Being fat or wrinkled also puts you into an asexual category.

That is the very reasoning that the religious leaders give for insisting on their women being covered up. That and the fact that they cannot trust their menfolk to control their urges.
As with so many sexual crimes it is the aggressor who should be 'shackled' in some way, rather than the victims
