Who do you think is a 'gay music icon' (besides Lady Gaga)?

Édith Piaf, 'la petite moineau'…

a gay music icon has to be a gay men or woman not a heterosexual one like those stupid bitches of lady gaga, cher, madonna and katty perry.

to me they are two gay icons ,one is anglo and the other hispanic. i'm taking about elton jon and juan gabriel.

this guy is real pride of the gay community, gosh i love so much all his songs!!

^_^ Grazie! I certainly can understand why both you and one of my friends mentioned him as an Hispanic 'gay music icon' – and as a pure singer, I also would have to give him the edge over Elton John (that was an impressive high note he held for sooo loong)… ;)

I was just going to post more Piaf, today – if I hadn't got the unexpected, but excellent, responses above from both belamo and GiacomoPisani – so, now, I'm thinking I perhaps should post (if possible) someone who's popular, Italian and gay (that moreover would appeal to my two esteemed respondents)… So, I don't know if the following composer was gay, but he was Italian and wildly popular in his time, and the performer definitely was gay… Hope you guys enjoy it!

So, please, don't think I'm dour (or sentimental) just cos I like 'La môme Piaf' and find her life (and music) kind of stirring

I'm going to try a little experiment today – if there's anyone else still interested in the progress of this thread… But first I want to thank everyone who has contributed so knowledgeably and informatively to date – I appreciate all your entries and want you to know, I, at least, certainly have learned a lot.

OK, here's what I'm going to try today: I've researched a song from the 1930s by the gay composer Cole Porter, which he dedicated to the expatriate American, gay cabaret performer (and influential club owner and literary icon) of 'jazz age' Paris
Ada 'Bricktop' Smith

The song was Miss Otis Regrets, but unfortunately I couldn't find Bricktop's version (or any other song by her, for that matter) anywhere on the WWW. So, instead, I'm going to post (in no more than my next two or three entries, I hope) a fair number of worthy versions of the song, as it was interpreted by other, notable singers of the past – some of whom also easily could be considered 'gay music icons' – in as close to chronological order as I can. But, just to set the stage, here's another tribute to Bricktop by another eminent, French composer/musician of the era – Django Reinhardt (et la Quintette du Hot Club de France) from March 10, 1948…

I'm not sure about Kate's career in general, but if it gets any more gay than this, it will grow into a cancer and eat you up with a spoon.

^_^ Kate Bush… :=D: I wonder, did she ever get to the top of that hill (she was always running up…)?

Here's someone who did get to 'the top,' for sure, though – Mabel Mercer

All the same, as renowned an interpreter of Cole Porter's music as she was, here is the only 'vid' of one of his songs I was able to find on YouTube (no Miss Otis Regrets, I regret to say) – from her 1955 record album, Mabel Mercer Sings Cole Porter

Here's the song the famous, gay socialite/photographer from the 1930s, Carl Van Vechten, said was one of his favorites by Mabel Mercer (in the second article about Mabel Mercer I linked to – in that manner – above)… Again, however, I couldn't find one of her versions on the Web, so instead here's one by another, previously mentioned, 'gay music icon' – recorded in the sad evening of the day on which Martin Luther King, Jr, was assassinated (in Atlanta)…
