  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Who taught you how to tie a necktie?

It is funny. I only used "necktie" because I figured people would comment if I just called it a tie.

You opened the thread asking about two distinctly different types of ties, too.

You did right. Nevermind the nitpicking. It never ends.

I think historically it was proper to use necktie because it was a particular type of tie. Now that other ties like ascots ties and bow ties are rarely worn most people just use tie and everyone is going to know what you mean.

My grandfather gave me my first tie and taught me how to tie it. I don’t think I ever saw my father wear a tie.

Well, now we have the man bun. Is that done with a hair tie, or a hair knot? A zip tie? A pull tie? A twist tie. . . .

It isn't nit-picking, it's a question of interest. I find it bizarre that people use the term "roadmap". Almost all maps show roads, so it's just called a map (unless some specific other document is called for). Similarly with "horseback-riding": riding is sufficient, as no other animals are commonly ridden, nor any part of them other than the back.

Yes, apparently you find it interesting enough that it doesn't bother you to rudely disrupt an ongoing conversation. I try to avoid such crass behaviour.

It's not hard to start a new, separate thread.

If someone told me they were going riding I’d think motorcycle not horse.

I was taught by my father to do a single windsor and by a shop homo how to tie a perfect double windsor and a bow tie.

For the life of me now I probably couldn't tie a bow tie worth shit, but the windsors are like overlearned behaviour.

Forget the tie. I'll just wear my leisure suit.

Get off my lawn!

My father taught me how to tie a neck tie. I only know one way so I don't know what the name of the knot is. I have no idea how to tie a bow tie. If I ever wore one it must have been one that was already tied and set up as a clip-on.

^Same for me.
