Why Ontario doesn't want to re-open the border with New York State any time soon.

The funny thing is that you NEVER find that many people crowding the promenades, unless there is a mass event going on.

One would normally find people maintaining bigger social distancing in those places all day long.

And here you would find only random cars.. many of them doing driving practices...

^ They are lucky so be sent directly to Heaven: in the Western world, if they ever did anything pissing off the powers that be, they would be publicly disgraced, ostracized and condemned to hell on earth... or, worse, they would be first totally ignored and derired by the public, then blamed by them for the problems about which they had warned the good people in their countries.

I'm just worried because American meat processors have been hit so hard. There is a real concern that the food supply will be affected by all the shutdowns in the food supply chain.

One supplier for local stores hasn't been delivering; there were stretches of empty shelves where their stuff usually sits. And the only paper goods, e.g. TP and tissues, have only generic.

^ To what, that American rice bowls are about to fall?

With all due respect, there won't be any shortage of things to worry about for the next year.

The news media thrives on magnifying fear and bottling it so to keep the viewer tuning back in. It is the serial killer phenomenon. You can take something that is statistically incredibly rare, broadcast it like it's an imminent threat, and plant the fear among worriers that they might be at risk.

As for the meat, all the concern should be for the workers. They are being pressured into working unsafely by huge, rich companies and by a White House that is terrified it will be blamed for the impacts of the virus come November.

Think about it. The pigs, cows, sheep and chickens are still there. It's not like the produce trade where missing migrant workers spells waste and spoilage. A cow standing in a pasture is still a cow, not a piece of rotting perishable fruit. Ranchers are not going to kill off herds because they cannot feed them. They will wait, especially with prices rising.

And what of the supply chain? If meat is slower to market, American will simply eat less meat. Not a crisis until it results in other shortages.

Then there is the War Powers Act. If the country needs to, it can send it National Guard troops and others to man fields or meatpackers if needed.

Wait until then before worrying.

And ignore the evening news with the food line pics. Everyone in those cars is sitting in a 20-30 thousand dollar asset that hasn't been required to be liquidated. There is also no one begging from next door, so it's a matter of mentality. In India, crop workers are actually starving, not just inconvenienced.

^ Mostly everything right, except that cows, being still cows, do age, and that is a sort of rotting for meat: quality decreases, not dramatically, but it does. So it is not like you can keep a cow grazing for months and years, and let that make no difference to the beef resulting.

In any case, the point of that piece of news is whether you have to wait until shortage is actually there to start worrying but, still, you are basically right: the "story" being pandered by the media is the script of the cheap disaster movie starring 1990 TV glories. People never worry about real threats, because it would be irresponsibly impopular for the media to warn them about upcoming real disasters.

Enjoy this years MetPet Gala

I played you don't know Jack with some friends from Denver. One of my friends setup his laptop so it showed the game and we all played on our Phones. Super fun and highly recommended.

Wendy's has had to remove burgers from their menu in some locations due to fresh ground beef shortage. Costco and supermarkets are back to limiting the amount of beef and chicken you can purchase here, not because of hoarding but because of supply chain issues.

Do you have any idea what Vannie has been wiping his butt with?

Toilet paper still in short supply everywhere I go.

Not the biggest worry, but it's a shortage. And similar shortages could indeed affect food supply chains. It's something we can think about and manage.

The news media thrives on magnifying fear and bottling it so to keep the viewer tuning back in.

Total agreement. And it's not just the media. And lots of people are hungry for scary stories.

You can take something that is statistically incredibly rare, broadcast it like it's an imminent threat, and plant the fear among worriers that they might be at risk.

Preach.

Well, the meat industry does supply millions of meals that will need to be replaced with other foodstuffs if they shut down. I think meat supply is super important in that way. Last week, wholesale beef prices were way up, pork was stable. Wholesale shelves are emptying out. Egg prices are dropping. Tomorrow is a new day!

Ranchers actually are killing off their livestock: https://www.vox.com/2020/5/4/21243636/meat-packing-plant-supply-chain-animals-killed

Oat futures are up, pig bellies down.

The food supply IS a problem, but not a problem to PANIC about.

Vannie's butt on the other hand...

On the upside, there should soon be a lot of new fat-shaming jokes going around.

Mass production. Mass economy. Mass society. Especially in a country like the USA, everything is about bulk in the constant circular flow of interdepent services and resources that is capitalism. Cut it short...

Notty must have had in mind a small farmer of the pioneer era rather than a modern livestock business in a modern industrial era. I amended his view focusing on the product, when we both forgot that the bulk our economy, like I said at the beginning, is still based on supply. Only those whose model is already beyond the supply-side era are better equipped to get through times like these.

Put in the effort when dressing for the mundane little tasks of the day. You don't get to go out much so make the most of the occasion.
