You can take something that is statistically incredibly rare, broadcast it like it's an imminent threat, and plant the fear among worriers that they might be at risk.
As for the meat, all the concern should be for the workers. They are being pressured into working unsafely by huge, rich companies and by a White House that is terrified it will be blamed for the impacts of the virus come November.
Think about it. The pigs, cows, sheep and chickens are still there. It's not like the produce trade where missing migrant workers spells waste and spoilage. A cow standing in a pasture is still a cow, not a piece of rotting perishable fruit. Ranchers are not going to kill off herds because they cannot feed them. They will wait, especially with prices rising.
And what of the supply chain? If meat is slower to market, American will simply eat less meat. Not a crisis until it results in other shortages.
There is also no one begging from next door, so it's a matter of mentality. In India, crop workers are actually starving, not just inconvenienced.
