In today's times, homosexuality is accepted and has the most support since anytime that I can remember, so I wonder and I ask, Why are there so many teens taking their lives?? I will never understand why people make it a social issue for them to pursue since it doesn't affect them in anyway. Straight people, how do gay people make your life any different that you feel a need to act out??? I don't understand. It's sad...

I've got a theory that the more accepted homosexuality becomes, the more the people who don't accept homosexuality are gonna act up. There will be more and more gay sex scandals, more and more instances of bullying and violence.

What I can hope is that with more and more awareness and acceptance, less and less teens will be killing themselves over it all.

We're hearing about them because of Tyler Clementi. It's sad that it took his death to open the eyes of the world, but it's opened eyes to the fact that Tyler's wasn't an isolated incident.

Some good has come out of it. People can't deny its existence any longer.

Yes, question to straight people that act out in the form of verbal insults, rallying against gays, etc. How do gay people impact that individuals life to the extent that they take the time to denounce the gay human being??

I totally agree with this.

This is why. His case got the coverage since it was so bizarre. Then it shined the light on several other recent suicides. Gay suicides have always been high. This really isn't a new problem. But I am glad it is being seen now. Maybe people will think twice b4 they keep putting us on the back of the bus when they see children getting their message loud and clear and dying for it. It is hard as a teen. I came out at 15 in 1989 and was suicidal. I attempted it. You learn how many people hate you and it effects you as a child. You have to grow that thick skin. I was at least 22 b4 I really got that thick skin and didn't let it bother me. But even with that thick skin it still makes me sad to see all we can't have or do. I just hope I see us get our rights b4 I am a old man.

the more homosexuality gets closer to a "norm" the more closed minded people get scared. who is anybody to decided what the normal is?? its very sad...there are bigger bigger problems then who we are fucking...excuse the language...ive always said this that which we hate in people is what we see in our self...plain and simple

Like bankside, I agree that you summoned it up quite nicely.

A very nice young gay man (21) in my neighborhood committed suicide last month. Very sad. Tears flowed very freely at Adam's funeral.

There is an interesting study which shows a relationship between suicide rates and suicide news on the media. After a suicide gets on the news, many people might take this as an "inspiration"... or maybe the news just influences people subconsciously. While I think it's hasty to conclude a causality, it hints that the media is actually killing people by broadcasting suicide news. So if there's an outbreak of gay suicides all of a sudden, you can blame it on the darn media.

(Although I guess stuff like this needs to get on the news for our nation to see the problem.)

Homophobia is still bad in many Western schools, colleges and Unis I'm sure. And let's not pretend that all parents, or authority figures responsible for children, are open minded, fair people.

We're simply hearing about it more imo, and maybe, just maybe, starting to realize more and more the effect all the anti-gay legislation, rallying against gay rights etc has on LGBT youth and adults.

It's the current hot topic. There aren't more suicides or more bullying, the media is just reporting more incidents of them now because people are interested. I predict that within a few weeks, the interest will subside and people will resume not caring before any serious impact is made on the problem. It always happens.

Homophobia is still very bad in many places, especially in the US.

I was just arguing about this on another forum and one regular poster i know seriously suggested that "if they don't want to be bullied then they shouldn't be gay".

Unfortunately that attitude extends to many school leaders who basically enable bullying of gay kids and do little or nothing to stop it.

I'd say two reasons:

1. It's (as doctorsun says) The Hot Topic. Through whatever dynamic, the news story catches on and becomes a thing.

2. As gays are more accepted, teens are more willing to be out as gay, and their families are more willing to accept them AND publicly decry their bullying.

There have always been gay kids killing themselves, but rarely saying why - and far more rarely have their families stood up for them. These things were dirty little secrets.

As we're more accepted, these issues are more public, and there is greater outrage.

People suck, they always will.

We can be accepted as much as we want, but there will always be that few who would rather judge us on our sexual orientation, than our personalities and what we bring to the world. In their minds we're bringing diseases or some fathomed idea that we want to alter the world.

People choose not to understand, therefore they choose to be suck-y suckers as well. -_-

Apparently Equality for Gays is equivalent to a Terrorist Threat Level 1.

It is more complicated.
I think its an alarming development in the USA.
As a German friend I notice this development since several years.
Okay, I know the puritan society of the USA. There was always a difference between America und Western Europe. West-Europe is not a paradise for gay people but today its normal, that we have a gay prime minister (Iceland), gay secretaries (german foreign minister) or gay mayors (Paris, Berlin...) and you can marry your gay boy friend.
I know, its more complex in the USA ( and in Eastern-Europe too). But I always thought there is tolerance in America, no violence, no disregard.
But times have changed since 9/11. America is an ultraconservative nation today. Against muslims, against outsiders, against gays. The terrible Tea Party is a result. A republican politican can wear a Nazi-uniform and nobody judge this behavior sharply. A priest ( O my God!) wants to burning the Koran and where is the exclamation of surprise I wish I would hear in the american society?
Your President wants to reform the health care system and what is the reaction? Of course you can say:" No, I am against it". But I hear:" Obama wants a dictatorship. Obama is like Hitler!" Wow, how hysterical! How disproportionate!

How can a young gay man live in this close-minded society? How can he live in this society, if the far right makes the rules.

Don`t forget the Age of Enlightment! Don ` t forget, that the fathers of constitution disestablished staate and religion!
Don`t forget the pursuit of Happiness - for everybody.

Its a shame for an open, liberal society, if a young gay man commit suicide because he is gay. I thought, that times are over... I am very sad.

Greets to all my american friends with the same thoughts like me! And to the young gay men: Hold out!

The intolerance of hate spoken by some right wing politicans, right wing talk radio and religius right. Gays are the easy target and the scape goat for way to avoid the real issues.
