I mean really, why. ALl of the "gay icons" are old women. Cher, liza minelli, Joan Rivers, Bette Middler, Kathy Griffin, Diana Ross, ...MAdonna.

Why?!

So which Younger-Female Artists are worthy to be called "Icons"?

Why?!

Well, for one thing, they WEREN'T old when they became 'gay icons'.

Yup. A 21 year old usually makes a pretty crappy icon for anything. People need time to become legendary.

What an utterly, utterly stupid question.

I can only assume that you are 14 and have no access to Google, books, movies or photographs.

Come back to me in about 40 years and let me know what you think of Lady GaGa and Aguilera. One of the tests of being an icon is lasting for more than a decade, by the way.

And for having inner beauty and strength as well as a 'face'.

And if you want to take one example of an icon you didn't name, check out Liz Taylor. She transcended icon in her later years by becoming the original celebrity voice and spirit of AIDS awareness and philanthropy.

You forgot Judy Garland!

Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga. 2 people who can actually sing.

I agree that Chris & Gaga can sing and have a strong Gay Following. I consider them to be Superstars. Let's put Chris to the side and focus on Gaga.

One could argue/debate her Celebrity-status in the Gay Community. She's been a voice for our Community on & off the stage like no other New Artist dared to do......So does her Strong Gay Following and Activism make her a "Gay Idol" or"Gay Icon"? When you put her on the table you do have a legitimate argument...

Interesting....

Gaga is an ok singer, who has only been spreading gay awareness for 2-3 years. Christina is an amazing singer who has been in the industry for over a decade, and has spread gay awareness for many years and lets not forgot how groundbreaking the "BEautiful" music video was for its time.

I would definitely call CHristina a gay icon for sure. Gaga is debatable.

I also know of homos who think that Gaga is an ugly hag too. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Could it be that beauty is in the eye of the beholder?

My "Gay Icons" are Ellen, Rosie, and Rachel Maddow.

I am too young to even know half of the "Gay Icons" let alone put a name to the face.

I only know one half probably because of Will&Grace

What about James Dean, I know he is a big icon for some gay men. Was he an old hag?

But really, gay people have worked so hard to stop the stereotypes and prejudices against them, and here you are just fueling it. Do we really need a thread using these types of outdated generalizations?

Why do you assume gay people all do the same thing?

Well im a bit younger so my gay icons would be ....
Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Madonna, Im not really a Cher fan but she gets props because she helped pave the way.

Overall these "hags" made music that you could feel. The music of these "hags" made statements. They were about self expression. They also openly supported the gay lifestyle and you must admit, club mixes and dance songs would NOT be the same without the voices of the "hags". its not a gay thing. Its a pop thing. They will FOREVER reign as the top "QUEENS", lol us gays just give them the praise they deserve

The 2 you like, CA and Gaga, could not even come close to compare on the other icons you speak of.

They have accomplished so more . Your 2 in 20/30 yrs could get to where the others are in time. They are not bad singers but there just young pups.... and if they stay current they may last.

I am twenty one... and I think that to be an icon you need to seriously commit to something and I think that gaga and christina have not really committed enough to it.. plus they are not really risking anything by standing up for us.. christina is not super overt in her support and gaga seems to rely on our support....

These people you mentioned supported us in a time that it was a risk to their careers to do so.
