Why do men have nipples?

No way...really?! I've never lactated. The only body part I've got milk from is...well, you know.

No no, the lactation is true enough. A trans woman partner of mine is currently inducing lactation so the baby will have two sources of food, cuz baby's currently a bit of a glutton and her partners', well, worn out. Y'don't need to be female to get milk. Though it's difficult as hell to get right, as I understand it. (partner doesn't identify as female)

damn you, OP, you made me break out my notes. good think too. i almost said prolactin, but its oxytocin.
its cuz both sexes have the gene for relaxin. relaxin is the hormonal opposite to oxytocin - it causes the relaxation of smooth muscle (like that in the reproductive tract, and those in the mammary glands). however, it is also responsible in fetal nipple formation, since mice that are relaxin knockouts are born without nipples. the original idea was to track where it was essential in reproduction - they thought the pregnancy wouldnt work because the uterine muscles would be straining too much for proper attachment. but the pregnancy was brought to term. and then they thought milk wouldnt be produced and the babies would starve. nope. milk was produced and built up inside the mom, and the babies only starved cuz the milk had no way of getting to them. sucks really. my prof was telling how it was horrible, but so fascinating. lol

A female has XX chromosome. A male has XY chromosomes. Nipples are from the X chromosome (the female strand of chromosome).
not so. biology is not nearly as simple.
prolactin is linked to chromosome 6 in humans. 7 in pigs i think. idk about other species.

the x chromosome does NOT code for femaleness. it is just another chromosome. there is no code for femaleness - thats the default. there is just an overide for maleness. and that is the SRY gene on the y chromosome. it produces SRY protein that turns the gonads into testes that make testosterone that sets off the rest of the changes (along with other androgens like the more-potent dihydrotestosterone).

Actually, male nipples aren't just decoration and erogenous zones. Men are able to lactate enough to keep a nursing baby alive.
eh. not naturally.
lactation requires estrogen and prolactin. men are very low in both. if you were artificially supplemented with those hormones then yes. but it would take a while for enough mammary tissue to be built up for a sufficient amount of milk to be produced to feed an infant.

Well now that we've solved the mystery, I'd like to remind people not to touch mine, lick mine, and especially not to bite mine - I don't get any sensation out of it... and biting them is just REALLY annoying.

It's a given for all mammals actually. Not just humans. All male mammals have nipples. I guess the reason could be because they do no harm on a male, but are an advantage to a female, therefore are left for males as well. Genetics/evolution probably doesn't see a reason to exclude them from males.

FYI, you don't start out as a female in the womb. Within like <1 second of a sperm making contact with an egg it's determined if you're a male or a female.

i think the people who said we start out female meant to say, we develop as if we were female, until all of a sudden it changes. which is true. when the SRY gene on the Y chromosome becomes activated, you have gonads (undifferentiated) and mullerian ducts (which develop into the female reproductive tract). that gene causes the gonads, which would otherwise become ovaries, to instead change into testes. these then develop antimullerian hormone while becoming testes, destroying the mullerian ducts. once developed the testes secrete testosterone, which allows the wolffian ducts to develop into the male reproductive tact.

So you can have an erection without touching John Thomas. Rub your left tit and bingo, instant hard on. It works every time....or at least for me, anyways.

Okay. so I was at a funeral service today. A guy there was called John Thomas. I didn't touch him. I rubbed my left tit. No erection.

what was I doing wrong?

My right one is more sensitive but rubbing it doesn't always produce a boner. Plus it gets sore after a while. Do you use lube or just dry rubbing?

Nips often seem to work independently of one another... one more sensitive than the other, one perkier than the other. Dry rubbing for me, or precum, or saliva. All work well alone... or with nipple-loving friends!

Nope, just a fingernail. I obviously have very sensitive nips, probably the only sensitive thing about me.

There was never a genetic selection to uncouple the genes for nipples.

Didn't anyone read Cowboy's article?
