Why do people own pets?

But seriously, animals give people companionship, and it's a person's responsibility to take care of that animal from birth til death. Animals are loyal and would go to great lengths to comfort, support and/or protect their owner(s). Most people with pets not only see their pets as pets, but as friends and/or family. My dogs are like family, and yes, I know one day they'll be gone, but I cherish the time I have with them.
 
I like pets but i'm not willing to clean up their mess yet :)

Oh, by the way, do dogs like to walk with you at night ?

Dogs will walk with you any time you want them too. Doesn't matter if it's daytime, nighttime, snowing or raining. You do have to be careful that in the winter they don't frostbite the pads of their feet. And in the summer don't burn the pads if the ground/sidewalk is hot.
 
I have a cat but I think she has a species disorder because she follows me around like a dog. And she absolutely loves sleeping next to me in the bed.

Unfortunaletly my boyfriend can't sleep in the bed because of his sleep apnea, so where the pillow would be on his side of the bed is where she sleeps at night. When it is bed time she will jump up and wait for me to move the pillow so she can lay there.

Minnie, our little deaf and partially blind cat sleeps tucked up by my face most nights. I have been awakened in the middle of the night by a furious face bath and almost without fail...when she wakes up in the early morning at about 4 am...she sneezes in my face.

And yet when I am travelling...I miss having her there so much.

That's about the time that Boots wants to go out and Samwise jumps up on my bed for head scratches and petting.

What is is about 4 o'clock?
 
Years ago some friends were visiting. The ex and I ran to the store and when we got back, one friend relayed his little story. He was sitting in the chair next to the front door. TJ (cat) walked up by the door then stood up and patted him on the face. Then sat down in front of the door. IOW, it Was TJ's way of saying, "let me out please".

All the cats were taught that they had to come in at night. They were never fed outside, a big water dish, yes.

We had one cat (Courtney) who would go to bed with us. She'd wait for about 30 minutes then you'd hear her jump up on the kitchen counter. She knew that was not allowed. Before going to bed one night, I put water all over the counter. Didn't work. I got a tad p'oed. The next teaching moment came a couple nights later. I lined up empty beer/pop cans the full length of the counter. Off to bed we go. Same thing, 30 minutes later she's in the kitchen. Then it sounded like WWIII. Cans go everywhere! We hear a thump as she hit the floor. Both of us were laughing like mad. It worked, last time she got on the counter.

As I noted, Minnie sneezes every morning when she wakes up...usually in my face. And she and her brother snore and purr so loud that we have to up the volume on the TV.

I always napped with my dog--it's one of the things I miss most. To answer the question --once you get one you will know. But you are right about the dying part---I was curled up in a ball for two weeks after my dog died. It's a lot to deal with.
