I think many gay activists and people on the left feel a sense of obligation to defend the rights of Muslims, because as a minority they suffer discrimination and persecution in the West, like the LGBTQ+ community and racial/ethnic and religious minorities. And rightly so. But I also think it is important to recognize and condemn any belief, dogma, or practice that attacks, harms, or belittles the LGBTQ+ community or interferes with anyone's right to self-determination, wherever it comes from. Thus, I think that whether it comes from Islam, Christianity, or the secular community, anything of this nature is fair game. But it must be made clear that what is being attacked is the specific belief or practice, not the religion itself, since there are many different views from within the communities of Islam, Christianity, or any other community. It is easy in the West to watch mostly foreign news reports and develop a truncated stereotype of Islam from the most problematic and extreme elements. Likewise many activists have created a sort of caricature of Christianity which contains all the elements they wish to attack. Remember, attack the beliefs and practices that harm when it comes from religion, and avoid a wholesale attack of the religion itself.
