This is so totally disgusting

I have 2 Dachshund's and both of them on occasion will eat their own crap. And I don't know why.

Does anyone else have dogs that do this? And what's the theory behind this, why do they do it? They're on one of the best dog foods there is (I don't buy that junk from the grocery store) and they get occasional treats, but I can't let them overeat because Dachshund's put on weight very easily (both of mine are tweenies) so they're on limited amounts, they only get a total of one cup of food per day each, spaced out into 2 meals.

Are they that hungry????

I know, it's gross. I won't even let them kiss me anymore. I mean, it's not like they do it all the time, but it still grosses me out. And I don't know why they're doing this.

My dog did once. She usually eats chicken bones she finds on the ground, so I ran to get it out of her mouth. I soaked my hand for 7 days. I don't know why. Dogs are weird creatures. Once she rolled around in crap! I was pissed, so i took her to the professionals to clean her. haha, I'm lazy.

Eww, I wouldn't want that task either

I have three dogs and the Vet told me its was something lacking in their diet or lack of excerise. I know they got enough excerise so I changed their food to Solid Gold its a natural food no fillers and it did the trick. I know it was so disgusting and gross I would give then Scope when they came in.

Solid Gold. I think I've heard of that.

I did some research on dog foods that were 'graded' according to their ingredients and nutrition levels and this stuff called Natural Balance got over-the-top marks, so I've been feeding them that.

A behavior that is very common in dogs but not well understood is the eating of feces. Technically this is known as coprophagia. When given the chance, many dogs will eat the feces of other animals such as horses, deer and house cats. Raiding the litterbox is a common activity for dogs in households with cats. The behavior may be derived from the carnivorous (meat-eating) heritage of our pets. Carnivores frequently eat the internal organs and stomach contents (including poop) of the animals that they kill. As a result, eating the feces of other animals may be a normal extension of their carnivore behavior. There may be proteins and other nutrients in the feces that are eaten. Less well understood is why some dogs eat the feces of other dogs or even their own feces. There are a number of animals that normally eat their own feces or the feces of other members of their species. These include rabbits, horses and rats. In these animals it is thought that eating of feces may provide nutrients, enzymes or bacteria that help with digestion.
It is not known why dogs eat their own feces. For some dogs it is a strong habit while others may never do it. One theory is that it may be related to boredom or stress. Another is that it is related to digestive deficiencies. Neither theory has any support at the present time. No one really knows what causes it.
Controlling or stopping coprophagia is very difficult. Veterinarians can supply a substance that can be added to a dog’s food that makes the feces distasteful. Sometimes this is helpful. Most of the time, the best way to stop the behavior is to prevent the dog from getting to feces. Picking up soon after your dog has pooped can be the best way to prevent him from getting to his own feces.

I don't think they're hungry. If they were hungry, they would go for your throat.

I don't know if its so much whether or not they're eating poop (I trust it is THEIR poop they are eating and not that of other dogs...or yours:eek: )
Yes, it's their own, or sometimes each other's.

Thanks for the info, maybe I'll try that.

It's 'cos you're "best dog foods there is" tastes so good they're eating it twice. Give them shit to eat and they'll only do it the once, rather than shitting it out and eating it again ;)

Yes. I'm bored.

Do they have a designated area for their voiding?

I just talked to a vet friend of mine, and he said dogs HATE to soil their living area..play area....sleeping area...feeding area..He said if they are just going outside in the same area they play, they would eat it to avoid soiling their area

Although disgusting...I guess its not unusual

Yeah, the back yard, basically.

Hmmm, I suppose that's another theory, yep.
