  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

why?...explain to me...why?

I teach Language and often notice mistakes on posts here. However, I really don't make judgements as I know some of my better students are not good spellers and some of my best spellers aren't always my best students...does that make sense? In other words..don't sweat it. The people that point out grammatical errors do it because they have a mean streak and need to feel superior, IMHO.

I agree with Zingerific, some eagle eye will point out that I'm a Language teacher and have several mistakes in this post. Since we aren't graded on our posts and this is kind of informal, we should not worry about it. Life is too short.

I'd never point out someone's spelling or grammatical errors to them in a thread.

It's just bad manners. I'm sure I've made them myself, as much as I try not to.

However, I will say this to no one in particular: whenever I see or hear English speaking people use the phrase, "Me and him" did such and such, I want to scream.

I'd never correct that usage in a thread, but were I an employer, and someone said that in a job interview, they'd need to have some other options for employment open to them.

Tom, good post................BUT

ONE: I can ignore spellings if English is NOT a person's first language

TWO: I can ignore a few, non-descript spelling errors if English is a person's first language.....

THREE: I canNOT ignore deliberate, careless, I-don't-give-a-crap-about-spelling, etc....

See my point and maybe some other's out there?

I think the #3 reason is reason enough to call foul and make the person post with intelligence and NOT sloppiness...

Thanks for allowing "my" answer.(*8*)(*8*):kiss::kiss:

I think it's the level of technology given to us, these days that should make spelling errors a thing of the past.

Anyone who uses Mozilla Firefox, should know what I'm talking about. I updated to 2.0.5 awhile ago, and since then discovered something weird:

All my misspelled words are underlined in red, just like in a word processor. So, that certainly helps me catch almost all my errors now.

I can understand about the degrading comments, that's uncalled for. But as I've said before on this site, misspelled words can change the entire topic of a conversation. IF someone accidently punches the wrong key, and instead of to spells two or otherwise...

It just makes it that much harder for someone to read, and in turn, respond to it.

Of course, that's my opinion.

Intentionally misspelled words also make it more difficult to decipher the intentions of the poster, especially if the audience is not a native speaker. JUB has a world-wide audience, native speakers should take the time to structure their thoughts appropriately so everyone in the community can understand them.

okay, so are we only talking about misspelling or grammatical errors? Or are we talking about both?

Misspelling..hmm.. never my case. If I am in doubt of spelling a word correctly, I'll check it up with a dictionary. Come on, all you need to do is open another window and type the word into a dictionary website. Why are we being so lazy, it's not like we have to pull out a dusty old book, flip the pages, and scroll down for it.

If we're talking about grammar then I'm guilty as charge. Hehehe, sometimes a person can see his grammtical errors and correct them right away, most of the time like me, you get so use to using wrong grammars while online (from reading other's writing) that you forget which is the correct way.

I would hate to be a teacher or a person whose profession mainly deals with correcting grammar. They take their job too personally and sometimes forget that we are not their students. I don't blame them though, even as Adults, we should always be open-minded and learn more.

If they really want to correct us, atleast show respect by sending a PM and not by shouting "shut the fuck up and go back to school!" so everyone else can start copying and follow the trend to embarrass the person. That's bad. :(

I maintain that if you can read English you should be able to spell it.

If your spelling is giving you trouble, read more and write more. Repeat as necessary.

With the technology at your disposal, you don't even have to think any more, so carelessness, sloppiness and even just plain ol' ignorance are not excuses which can be offered in good conscience.

I border on the fanatical when it comes to correct spelling, punctuation and grammar in the posts that I make. On other people's posts I couldn't really give a rats, as long as I can understand what they're saying.

Nevertheless, I have been known to PM jubbers when they make spelling and/or grammatical/punctuation errors that severely detract from the meaning they're trying to convey. I can't help it ... I'm an English teacher! I do try to be polite about it, though, and I would never embarrass anyone with a public 'correction' post.

It's only one small step from bad spelling and grammar in your posts to bad spelling and grammar in other more important things.

Today in traffic I saw a plumber's van, branded all over the side in gigantic print with the company name "Pluming City - all your bathroom and kitchen needs." It's the first and only contact I have had with them and I'm sorry but if you can't even spell what you do for a living, I'm not hiring you.

Would you get your teeth done at a dentast?

Would you go for a spine operation at a nurosurgeon?

I'm not sure what the problem was regarding Pluming City - are the signwriters merely incompetents who didn't proofread before printing (a worry in itself since getting the signage right should be a priority for them), or is the "plumer" just not paying attention?

Or are they both completely clueless?

Today's lesson: First impressions count, children.

No one has to me yet and i can't spell worth crap. just can't be bothered on a leisure activity.

If I poke at someone's grammar, it is only 1.) in jest, like above, or 2.) when turnabout becomes fair play.

Timnmostud gave a fantastic example of that. :)

Also, if can undermine the intelligence of a deep and thoughtful post if you make it completely bloody unreadable!

I don't mind the odd error, but when people write one long run-on paragraph, awful spelling, no grammar, abbreviation, laziness, all of it, it irritates me. If you write in SMS-speak, I'm not gonna give you the time of day.

However, I will say this to no one in particular: whenever I see or hear English speaking people use the phrase, "Me and him" did such and such, I want to scream.

I usually do.

It is the lack of proper capitalization, improper possessives and shear laziness, like using 'wt' for 'what' that send me round the twist as I see the decline and fall of the English language all around us. Not only are many people too lazy to bother, they are increasingly proud of illiteracy. There is nothing more dangerous than an illiterate society.

I let 95% of the spelling and grammatical atrocities go by without comment on a bulletin board, but all our staff know that it is at their peril that they hand me anything with spelling errors in it.

Well before we get to an explanation as to "why?" I think there are some things that need to be addressed...

ur kidding right?......i mean you're.....explain to me why i should type proper english in my posts ....wt if i wrote like this the wt and u and ain't......y not?......

Reason #1 for proper spelling and grammar:

If I were to run the above statement through Babelfish from English into Ukrainian, and back into English again, the results would read:

Your grandmother's hairdresser is a pregnant umbrella.

look if the "spelling and grammatical atrocities " as you put it are not work related or for other people school/collage..why should they type correctly all the time......:)....like now....i feel like typing a fast comment so i type wt i want to say and it's still understood.....it's not like i type or write like this all the time...but wt if i want to relax here.....i'm not as good as u or someone else in grammar or spelling, english isn't...what is it called...my main language...it's not even my secondary language.....it comes third.....so i suck at spelling....so when i type a paper or send an e-mail or anything that requires proper english then i'll do the effort....but here I'd like to relax and misspell....and i'm not saying that u should keep it inside tell ur ears and eyes bleed....i'm saying if u want to comment do it nicely.....or even complain but like u guys did ( most of u...i haven't read the others so i don't know how everyone replayed) in ur posts here.....but some guys find it a joy to insult others because they misspell ....that's wt sucks...i get so annoyed when i read there posts and read wt they say to other people ....(by the way i hope u guys r still breathing after u read this post......i tried for a sentence or two to write ..well right...but then i thought this would be more fun ......:D (*8*) )

why would u do such a thing?....it's just a post ...i don't see any reason for it to be translated to a different language
