Why is the Republican Party so anti-gay??

Xtianists - bigots, homophobes, anti evolutionists, anti women - racists = The Repiglican Base

"Republicans" are not inherently anti-gay - for the most part they're ambivalent is my take

their weakness makes them bow to the minority within that is, sorta a "minority rules" sitch - which is unnecessary and weak. The pro and or ambivalent ones could control the hardcores by simply saying "you agree with us on most everything else ......."

but they don't

until they stand up to the every diminishing # of bigots, they will continue to be an ever shrinking minority

You think that Republicans hate gays because their party and their preachers have told them to. Oh they won't say they hate gays...not anymore...it is more like 'love the sinner, hate the sin' or....'I actually have a gay friend'.....kind of thing...but the reality is. the Republicans just fucking love homosexuals.

Homos have been the greatest whipping post ever since the civil rights thing was more or less settled and even immigrants can't rile the base better than getting millions of conservative women to picture their husband with his cock in another guy's mouth.

So the Republicans know that whenever they need a wedge issue to fight an election because they've got nothing else to offer...all they have to do is raid the closet and use the Gay card.

It is why they also love Islamaphobia. Most of them would be polite to Muslims, but they know that across the entire USA, the Isalm card is just as good as the Gay card for scaring the angry old white voters.

And of course, not to worry...as we get closer to the actual election, women's rights and immigrants will get their fair share of misanthropic sentiments tossed their way by the Republican candidates.

Just listen to the cues in the speeches at the convention.

I have to disagree with Chance here. Perhaps in the NE that is so, but that's certainly is NOT the case down here in the South, which is where the base lives.

The majority is not "Pro or ambivalent," they are casual, casual in their hatred, casual in their bigotry - and are actually quite capable of hating you while buying you a beer.

I do agree that it doesn't motivate the majority to the degree it does the lunatics who went off the cliff, but then they are not exactly the tiny minority of Republicans they may be in NY. But then the majority down here casually doesn't care if we are shat upon either.

This is a large part of it. But as that old show from the 1970's "All in the Family" proved very successfully there were plenty of non-critical thinking, bigoted, religious, homophobes living in the NE who were die hard Republicans like Archie Bunker. They never had to leave Queens or even visit the bible belt.
Some how it is assumed with sound reasoning that all hate comes from the uneducated southern bigot and other parts of the Country get a pass. While dated All in the Family wouldn't see the light of day in 2012, however that mindset was the focus of one of the most successful American TV shows. Everyone in the mid Atlantic, mid-west, or NE knew a Archie Bunker.
I agree, bigotry is everywhere. Philadelphia and Boston had their shares of very vocal people opposing desegregation; and Chicago had one of the most notable race riots in the 20th century.

I was only pointing out how the GOP became more Social Conservative beginning with the Southern block moving from the Democrats, and later with the culture wars when they felt they were loosing power.

Any thoughts?

Isn't the Republican Party supposed to be about small government, personal freedom, pro-business, pro-military, personal responsibility and fiscal responsibility?

So why does the GOP keep on demonizing & hating on us gay people? :( If this is about the Bible and "it's a sin!", well then don't Christians believe that Jews and Buddhists are going to the same place where "unrepentant gays" are going? Don't Christians believe that premarital sex, divorce, and having children out of wedlock is a sin?

So why don't Christians & Republicans demonize Jews, Buddhists, etc etc like how they do to gays? Why don't Christians & Republicans pick on divorced people and single mothers to the same extent they do to gays, or in their words "those living the homosexual lifestyle"?

But where are conservative gay people supposed to go, if they find some of the positions of the Democratic party to be a little too "left" for their tastes?

Has anyone heard of the Libertarian Party? Are there gay libertarian groups out there?

Just asking.

It began when the GOP took all the bigots in the South off the Democrats' hands, much to the betterment of that party. Then in the 80s the religious right did a calculated takeover of the GOP, tacking the Bible up as their standard right beside the flag.

But it's not about the Bible (or the flag), because the Bible does not teach what they do. It's about their hate, about having a place they can do it openly and proudly, and justify it with whatever lies they can round up (like "traditional marriage", which is a myth). When the bigots were spread across the parties, there wasn't anyplace they could be out and proud; now that they've taken over the Republican outfit, they can revel in their bigotry and call it righteousness -- no one will stand up and cast them out.

The Republican party hates gays because it was deliberately taken over by people who delight in hating, and gays are on their list.

Gay rights was one of the moves that caused me to want to leave the Republican Party. It got to the point where the open hatred and bigotry became too much to take. The outright hypocrisy of gay republicans is so outrageously over the top that any sane person would distance them from such idiocy. Just the term “gay republican” baffles me beyond what words can describe.

Spewing out hatred and bigotry on one hand while holding a Bible in the other professing the teachings of Jesus Christ is so transparently pandering and lying that it’s pathetic. YES, I’m a gay man, a Christian man, who accepts Jesus as my personal Lord and Saviour.

Republicans not only HATE the gays, but they also HATE the Hispanics, Jews, Blacks, Muslims, and ANYONE who is NOT WHITE. That’s who are and have always been. And SHAME SHAME on them all.

"All in the Family" proved very successfully there were plenty of non-critical thinking, bigoted, religious, homophobes living in the NE who were die hard Republicans like Archie Bunker. They never had to leave Queens or even visit the bible belt.

It should be noted (apropos of nothing) that Archie and his parents were once Roosevelt Republicans (as Edith tells her cousin Maude) According to Archie it was "Before we knew he was gonna hang on to the job for life, like the POPE!" Still one of my favorite lines. What an amazing show, the likes of which we will NEVER see again.

Republicans are not anti gay, they are PRO-marriage in the traditional meaning of the word. Like your Mom and Dad. It does not make them evil. Gay marriage will come, and there are a lot more important things happening..Democrats give gay marriage to gays like burglars throw a bone to the dog so he won't notice the house is being robbed.
lol this post is so sad. They not only fight against gay marriage, but also gay rights as a whole. Not to mention (seeing how gay marriage isn't important) science, proper sex education, freedom etc.

Actually, I have to agree. Sadly the ones controling the party are deeply homophobic (at least for the camera) and are the ones making the laws. If only the thinking republicans (oxy-moron?) would rise up and say fuck you to religion, then maybe I might consider them. Or it would be easier for us to get our rights.

Actually the ones in power would not get elected pandering to rabid homophobes if that wasn't what their base wanted.

Enlighten us all, why does the hate gay card work so well with republicans if so few of them are actually not anti-gay?

I mean come on,

...only their leaders and a small minority are anti gay...

Really? You find this convincing? You must live in a different Texas than I do.

Is it a coincidence that the rise of televangelism came about during the Reagan years too?
Some pretty high profile people there with strong views, big followings, deep pockets and lots of air time.

This is plausible. We have the same crazy left and right minorities in Canadian politics, but the sane people, left and right, have not felt compelled to divide up with the minorities. So, for example, crazy left-wingers in the New Democrats, crazy right-wingers in the Reform Party, and all the sane people in the middle with the Liberals.

until they stand up to the every diminishing # of bigots, they will continue to be an ever shrinking minority
If you can't have a centrist option, I do hope the right dissolves. The left fringe are economic idiots but that is a smaller issue than the unadulterated craziness coming out of the right.

,
George Orwell in 1984 had it down: Fear plus hate equals power.

Why are the Republicans anti gay? Easy answer they have been hijacked by Christian Theocrats.

So called "traditional marriage" is evil and unequal. Just like when back in the day traditional marriage meant thhat only members of the same race could get married so too is this form of traditional marriage unequal and anti gay rights.

First of all there is no such thing as Islamophobia. A religion which is homophobic has no right to claim a special phobia for themselves. Islamophobia makes as much sense as Naziphobia, Christophobia or Communistphobia. Bigoted ideologied do not deserve respect

I think you missed the point of his post. He was simply saying that in addition to rallying their supporters against gays when they need to, they can also rally their supporters against Islamists and Muslims by throwing terrorism up in the air.

Republicans will parade out any "enemy" that gives them a power base.
