Windows 10? Are you going to do it?

My system says "Windows 10 is ready to instal" but I am going to hold off a few days -

Make sure no one has been found a major bug before I click "OK"

Any new 'things', or just the same old 'things'?

What 'things' does 10 do that 7 doesn't?

I don't know anything about computers and I don't mess around with them because I always mess stuff up. With that said there is just a bit of a different look and the little bit I know how to do is working for me. Before I was having issues with browsers not working, except AOL, now they are. Edge is going to take a while for me to get use to, but it does work for the Total Rewards Marketplace, which I needed.

Hopefully others can be more helpful.

I'm using Win 10 and it's working great. Edge, their new browser, is a work in progress but ok. No extensions yet, and NOT thrilled with the lack of a menu bar (which I like) and the new way it handle bookmarking can be frustrating, especially when you want to move a bookmark "up" into another folder, or out of the one it got moved into accidentally (still have no idea how it even got moved there, wtf?), but it's a lot better than Explorer and they're supposed to be adding the ability to add extension and stuff this fall.

Much more stable than 7 and 8. Can't wait until they let me update my Win 7 machine.

Plus, the "Start" button is back, and an "X" in the upper right of every window, so no more wondering "how the fuck you leave this thing?" when you're on something like "settings" or any one of their other monochrome background apps and such.

I'm gonna hold off for a year for the same reason!!

I did it on my laptop which was pretty vanilla Win 7 Pro. I have to say they did an excellent job with distribution and installation. It went flawlessly. All of the apps, desktop and settings came across perfectly. A couple of thing to note. When it asks you to select express or custom settings, pick custom. This is where you can turn off the multiple settings that give Microsoft permission to basically see any and everything that is done on your computer. The only setting I left on was the one about crashes. If W10 blows up, they can have the dump; otherwise stay out of my business. The general look and feel is very much like Windows 7 but IMO it is not as nice. Big fonts and the flat square look make it appear juvenile in many respects. I'll have to see how I accustom to that. I am not certain about performance yet. It does not boot any faster than 7 but I'll have to use it a few days to ascertain how well it runs. I won't update my desktop computer, which is my main system for a while until things shake out. Overall grade at this time: B.

I ain'ts got my copy yet. Apparently it's an extended roll out, though my little Win 10 widget says it'll let me know when it's available.

I'm in no hurry.

Updated last night. It went through with no problems. Problem came after with no sound and no play back of videos. Took me a bit to figure out. Had to open sound and video drivers and search for drivers on system. Switched to the hd driver and that has resolved issue. Other than that bit of annoyance, its been ok.

I am still waiting for my notification.

Yes I will upgrade when it is available to me, I really don't see any reasons not to as I don't use my computer for more than Internet and documents.

Yep. As soon as I get the opportunity.

I've got a laptop (running 8.1) which I use purely for writing and recording music, and a desktop (also running 8.1) which I use for general day-to-day stuff (internet, listening to music, watching videos, etc). I also have a another spare desktop (running 7) which I use for general back-up stuff.

Windows 7 is good, although I much prefer 8.1. But I will upgrade my desktops as soon as I can. I'm looking forward to trying 10. I won't upgrade my music laptop though until I am sure that it is fully compatible with all my music-making hardware and software.

So....

Verdicts? Opinions? Hate or love?

Windows 10? Are you going to do it?

You know, if you replace the hard drive in your 5 yr old lap top you can keep using it for 5 more years.

The major cause for laptops dying is the hard drive wearing out. Yes, hard drives wear out. The 2nd most common cause is the RAM.

I have to disagree with that one. :)

From all of the laptops I've repaired/salvaged over the years, and the thorough autopsies I've performed on those that didn't make it, I've found that overheating is the leading cause of death.

I've tossed out several fried motherboards, but I have stacks of hard drives that are still in good working order.

A 5yo laptop is sure to be full of crap. The cooling systems are very delicate, and lots of people actually put the laptop on their laps, or worse, set them on a bed/blanket or tablecloth that closes off the airflow. If it is/has been a good laptop, a good professional cleaning might well make it last at least another 5 years.

Oh, and I also have stacks of RAM. I've never heard of RAM wearing out. It usually does become obsolete, though – too small/not enough.

It's very meh.

Right now I have an audio capture device that doesn't work in Win 10 due to dated drivers. The manufacturer is currently testing new drivers for Win 10 compatibility.

I also made a lot of use of Media Center, which is no longer supported.

I'll let it ride for another month or so, but I suspect I'll be rolling back to Win 7.
