Wish Me Luck

There's definitely some talent in your music! I had a reaction similar to strangepoetry where I found myself bobbing my head without thinking...but not getting up and dancing. But that's no surprise, as I've never been one who tends to dance...at all.

That's cool that you heard back, too! Was it the same artist you mentioned contacting, when you originally posted?

Sorry.... Strangepoetry, this isn't trance. This is actually really far from trance (although shifting towards that general direction might be a wise move! ;) ). Trance is in 8 or 16 and has much and many more complex melodic layers.

What Oddkun is making is great, but it's in 4 and channels more of that electro, slightly tribal, urban house sound.

What do you use for bass? Massive and lowender are pretty clean synths.

But yes... I just looooooove your art

Perhaps you're right. I'm not a DJ and thus not proficient in the technical aspects of Trance. However, my limited knowledge recognizes it as Trance. May be wrong, but that's what it sounds like to me.

By 8, 16, and 4 are you talking beats per bar? b/c i usually work in the 16 range actually. I used to love trance when I first started producing music( I think I was about 11), but it got too repetitive for me. The melodies aren't actually all that complex, and even the harmonies are a little basic. That being said though i can still respect it as a genre...

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it. ..|

Oh! almost forgot. For bass I usually use either a simple saw wav with the high frequencies filtered and a boosted low end or an actual bass guitar with the bass amped and plenty of compression. I don't worry about the bass too much though usually as i'm a lot more interested in getting multiple samples to work in harmony. Most of my songs use around 30 samples each if not more though the shorter ones rarely go above 15...

Trance is one of the hardest genres to produce because you have to make a repetitive melodic subject interesting and not only just interesting, but amazing. This, on top of other counter subjects, blend to make the track. I misspoke, the melodies ARE basic, but the layering is complex, a quality trance production will have about at minimum 40 layers at any given time. Good melodic trance has residual correlation to the classic fugal style, as does melodic death metal.

You may work in 16, but everything I listened to (which admittedly is everything... hehe), is phrased in 4. Just go back and count in 4 and you'll catch a deviation or loop each time. There's no larger scale phrasing going on so you can't in good conscience call it 16. It's inevitable with the type of samples you're working with. No good hop samples string out for that long. Plus it's much much easier to dance to.

Your original stuff goes pretty hard, you definitely have that jazz/glitch feel going. You might want to add some depth to your buildups and climax though. Maybe experiment with breaks if you're into that sort of thing.

Damn. Is it strange that I found your detailed explanation kinda sexy?!
You sound like a bona fide DJ.

I could argue about trance being the hardest to produce, but that would be getting off subject and you're a nice guy so I won't. You definitely make a good argument for it though :D

Most of my melodies run between 4 and 8 with some kind of switch up by the end of the 16. It's typical for me though to have other melodies and rhythmic elements that run 16 if not longer(they can be buried sometimes though). Beats are typically 16 with some being 8(usually for faster songs this seems to just feel better).

Really get you on the whole depth bit. It's one of the things i'm working really hard on right now. Breaks are great, and I use them a lot, but as far as harder break beats go i would worry about them being too present in the final mix. I usually end up layering tribal recordings with some kind of 60's or 70's psych break and then beefing up each individual part with sampled vinyl drum hits, a nice equalizer, and plenty of compression. Hope some of that made sense. it's a bit early for me to be rambling online haha!

Loving talking to someone who really understands music by the way (*8*)

OddKun, post a song from a DJ that you find inspiring, please.
Curious about your influences.

Hi oddkun!

I just tripped across this thread and listened to your music.

Good stuff! I like it. Keep it up, man. ..|

^^^Hmm...interesting.
First two are a bit TOO askew for comfort, according to my ears. Sunworshipper is fine, but I actually prefer your music over it. But, now I see where you're coming from...
