My last guy was a conservative republican and i'm a liberal democrat. We never got into politics talking because he hates talking about politics and also because he frustrated the hell out of me!! He's a nice guy but we are not compatiple at all in a relationship.

I'm a centrist; I guess my opposite would be an unrealistic extremist.

It's too big of an issue to get past. Relgion and politics will end a relationship faster than cheating. Why get into a relationship where heated arguments are going to be the norm?

Seems to work for James Carville and Mary Matalan
yeah but they're both so hideous looking nobody else would take them.

You’re right. James Carville is hideous, but strangely, I find him a little attractive for some reason.

I think it would be too big of an issue for me. The person I date doesn't have to have the same beliefs, but they do have to have similar values... and a lot of my values are related to politics in some way.

My ex and I were together for three years. He was brought up in a very conservative household from Montana and well, I was from Massachusetts. I thought at first that this relationship would never work based on our political differences but our "thing" for one another was just too big. We had it bad for one another.

What I did learn early on was that no one really ever challenged his way of thinking. It seemed like he lived in a Republican bubble. He had his marching orders and nothing was going to change his views. Well, I wouldn't let that stop me. When I would offer an alternative view with facts to back me up, he actually began to listen. Over the years, his view moderated to such a point where he changed his affiliation from Republican to Independent. I think he even voted for John Kerry (at least he told me so).

It was sad when our relationship came to an end but it wasn't because of political differences. I'm back in the dating pool again so I need all the help I can get. I don't want to limit my chances of meeting a great guy because of politics.

If the person and who they are inside rather than just their politics becomes the most important thing,it can work.
The thing is, someone's political beliefs are basically a mirror of who they are as a person. Conservatives are (by definition) stubborn, ignorant and close-minded, and those are not the type of people with whom I'd want to associate.

I could not would not date a Conservative.
I wouldnt date him for a week
If he touched me I would freak
If somehow he became my spouse
I would pack up and leave the house

I will not cannot date a Conservative!

Well, it's like this: democrats are dull, passionless, usually impotent, incontinent, on the low rung of the socio-economic ladder, unoriginal thinkers, angry, welfare sucking leeches. Who would want to date that?

I'm a Conservative I'm not stuborn or close-minded my familys all Liberal or New Democrat, I listen to them argue they listen to me, some times I'm wrong I admit it to them, when there wrong the just keep arguing that they're right. Your political affiliation dosn't determine whether your stuborn or not you do, niehter does it determine whether you open-mined or not.
I'm not going to pretend to know a thing about Canadian politics, but in America "conservative" is synonymous with anti-gay, anti-lower class, anti-minority, and anti-jewish/muslim/etc. We have no level-headed or reasonable conservatives. So blame American neo-cons for my stance on inter-partisan (is that even a phrase?) dating.

I've always liked Canadian guys, though ;)

On the other hand, republicans are all inbred hicks who cannot read or write or understand the importance of hygiene...

My advice is to find someone from Canada then move to Hawaii.

I'm a registered Democrat but I usually try to choose the best guy for the job regardless of political affiliation (slim pickings nowadays because here in America you have a choice between dumb and dumber). I suppose my middle of the way views make me a moderate.

A person's politics is their own business... Does the way someone votes at the polls really matter when you kiss them, hold them, or become completely enamoured by them? There is some truth to keeping religion and politics out of dialogue in polite company.

you forgot the big thing about republicans...they only like dating 16 yr old boys who intern in their office. and oh, they're also usually ugly as sin...i've never seen an attractive one anywhere. i have a thread about goodlooking politicos in current events and i couldn't find a decent looking republican to balance the thread out. so why would you wanna date an eyesore?

Political opposites tend to be interesting. However, the problem with most left-of-center personages is that they are bone-dead stupid; ignorant of facts, history, culture - there is a reason why West Viriginia keeps electing a liberal KKK Senator - Liberals are basically red-neck political sluts. Even Clinton admited when he and his co-president lost both houses of Congress that they got the message and they like power more than anything else - most liberals have no principles.

If you read all these posts it is amazing how blatantly stupid perceived enlightenment is.

Depends...

I've met many of my political opposites, but none of them are boyfriend material regardless of how desperate I am to be in a relationship.

If he could vow never to try and convert me to becoming a Conservative/Right-Winger....Then maybe....

But he has to stave off my attempts to make him join the left, :p lol.

wow...you right-wing wack jobs are outta the woodwork tonite! what's the matter...is it time for your nighttime, once a month feed on the blood of the poor?

I dated a Republican for a while and it totally sucked. I totally don't understand them. I dated a gay Democrat for a while and it was a bit better.... are there any gay greens out there? Or libertarians? I'm cute and single.
