Thank God it's over! The sport that 99% of Americans could absolutely care less about is gone for another four years. The sport that makes you sit watching for hours to see a thrilling (?) one goal is gone. The sport that that has you invest hours for a no decision tie has disappeared once again.

On my local sports radio station, one of the hosts could barely contain his glee, saying he detested soccer, so did his listeners, but station management told him to make a big deal out of it.

Now, bring on REAL football.

why did you watch/listen to this boring sport again?

Yaay! The sport that 94.5% of the world's population doesn't care that Americans can't play, don't know, and can't understand is still going!!!!

It may be boring to the OP but let's just say football is loved around the world. Btw, I thought the US did great in this year's World Cup.

I'm (African) American, and I could care less about American football, or handegg, lol. No appeal to me, though I can't say I actually sat down and enjoyed a game of real football either, as in "soccer".

Who won? Unlike the OP I didn't even know it was over.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't Italy. When they win many car horns blow in Hoboken. Besides, I heard this morning that the Italian team was glad to be heading home to focus on their acting careers.

'American football' is pretty shitty. Oh, yay...you ran five yards. WHISTLE! Not only is it lame to watch, but boring to play.

At least football is mildly entertaining. Don't see any obese people playing it either, unlike the 'American football'.

Personal digs are always appropriate. Instead of providing constructive criticism of the OP's post, you chose to personally attack an American sport. No one else has chosen to try and land a low blow because most of JUB is better than that.

Show me "obese" football players. I imagine it'd be pretty hard to play football as an obese person, as much running is required.

Back on topic, while I don't enjoy sports as much as any sports fan does, I enjoy watching FIFA. An event that brings the world together in competition is something I can get into. :D

I'm just glad USA got knocked out of the Cup. I fucking hate bandwagon fans of anything and they filled up my newsfeed with that crap rooting for USA. I can deal with the true fans of the sport but bandwagoners piss me off.

Discussing a sport in a nation of 300 million people is very 'personal'.

Riiiight.

Oh right, making fun of American football in several ways because the OP chose to insult football is TOTALLY not personal! Forgive me Callum.

Firstly, I support globalism and encourage Americans to open up to the world.

But with that said, I believe we are fooling ourselves if we think that soccer has anthing more that a marginal following in the U.S.

The whole time the World Cup was being promoted in the U.S. media like it was the Super Bowl or something, I was thinking nobody I know really cares much about this world sport much. They just may think some of the guys are cute. That's all.

someone who is not me and who shall remain nameless said:
Futbol is fetid with toxic memes, layers upon layers, like a bellicose, rancid lasagna.

I think this is hilarious (a lasagna?), and I had no idea what he meant by it until (science fiction writer) Charlie Stross, who grew up in Leeds, pointed me to this Wikipedia article about the Leeds United Service Crew. A more poisonous gang of thugs one cannot imagine (save by delving into Godwin's-Law territory):
On 28 April 2007, during the Championship game at Elland Road with Ipswich Town, about 200 home fans spilled on to the pitch and forced a 30-minute delay after a late Ipswich equaliser all but sealed Leeds' relegation to League One. Around 100 of them ran toward the South East stand where the away supporters were located. Eight wheelchair-using Ipswich fans suffered injuries including a cut face and bruising after they were trapped pitchside by the hooligans who showered them with coins, bottles and abuse. In January 2008 thirteen Leeds United fans were handed football banning orders totalling 45 years after they pleaded guilty to affray in connection with the pitch invasion.
(emphasis added)

Charlie informs me that this was AFTER the LUSC fans "cleaned up their act." He was left with a lifelong hatred for the game (which is just one of those associative things; nothing intrinsic to the game of futbol makes its fans into monsters).

Now one does, occasionally, see fans of American football (or more frequently baseball) getting into scuffles with opposing fans. But beating up the wheelchair users? Oy veh. THAT you would NEVER see on this side of the Atlantic, and if we ever do see it I will move elsewhere.

Now, this isn't typical of futbol fans worldwide. But people really do get hot under the collar about this game, to a greater extent than with any other sport I've ever seen.

soccer is REAL football.

You just don't like it because the USA can't hold a candle to other teams.
